—He’s done much worse!
Marisol’s voice came out broken, but it crossed the room with more force than the blow she had just received.
Alejandro still had one hand under her elbow to help her stand. In front of them, his mother lay on the floor, breathing heavily. A few steps away, Veronica clutched the mop as if she still didn’t understand what she had just done.
Alejandro looked at Marisol’s arm.
The skin was beginning to swell.
A red mark stretched out right where she had received the blow meant for her mother.
Then he raised his eyes to his wife.
—What does “much worse things” mean?
Veronica opened her mouth.
But this time Alejandro didn’t wait for her answer.
Because I had just remembered something.
A phrase from his mother.
A look from Marisol.
And all those little signs that for weeks I had preferred to interpret in the most convenient way.
Hours earlier, he still thought he knew his own house.
I had no idea how much could be hidden within walls when everyone was learning to keep quiet.
Chapter 1 — A House That’s Too Quiet
From the outside, the mansion looked exactly what Veronica wanted it to look like.
Order.
Elegance.
Control.
Nothing out of place.
Alejandro had learned to value precisely that because he spent a good part of his days away from home. When he returned, he wanted to find peace and quiet. No arguments. No domestic problems. No tensions that seemed insignificant compared to everything else.
And Veronica knew how to provide him with that illusion.
His mother, on the other hand, had never needed great comforts.
Since she was spending more time at the house, the old woman had grown accustomed to sitting for long periods in the living room. She observed more than she spoke and possessed a kind of patience that sometimes made Veronica uncomfortable.
Marisol was different.
She worked quickly, spoke little, and tried to go unnoticed.
But he had a special tenderness towards Alejandro’s mother.
If he saw that she needed to get up, he would approach her.
If something was too far away, it was reached.
He never made a spectacle of those small gestures.
That’s precisely why the old woman trusted her.
The first crack appeared one ordinary afternoon.
Alejandro entered the room and found his mother looking towards the hallway.
—What’s wrong, Mom?
She took too long to reply.
-Nothing.
Alejandro smiled.
—That face never means anything.
The woman lowered her gaze.
—Sometimes this house changes when you’re not here.
He thought she was talking about Veronica.
But he didn’t understand to what extent.
—Did you have another argument?
—I don’t want to cause you any problems.
That phrase must have worried him.
Instead, Alejandro did what so many people do when they can still choose the simplest explanation.
He convinced himself that they were just everyday frictions.
His mother had a strong character.
Veronica too.
It was inevitable that they would clash.
—If something serious happens, tell me.
The old woman looked directly at him.
—What if by the time it gets serious it’s too late?
Alejandro frowned.
But Veronica appeared at that moment.
—Are you worrying him again?
His tone seemed light.
Even affectionate.
He approached Alejandro and touched his arm.
—Your mom and I are fine.
The old woman did not answer.
Marisol, who was tidying up some things on the other side of the room, wasn’t there either.
However, Alejandro managed to see her stop her hands for a second.
Only one.
He then continued working.
That night, while Veronica was talking about something else, Alejandro remembered that gesture.
—Does Marisol have a problem with you?
Veronica let out a small laugh.
—¿Marisol?
—She seemed uncomfortable today.
—Alejandro, please. She’s an employee. Don’t turn every face she makes into a drama.
The answer made sense.
Or at least enough to allow him to ignore the discomfort.
Until details began to accumulate.
When Alejandro was present, Veronica would ask for things.
When she thought he couldn’t hear her, she gave orders.
When her mother said something at the table, Veronica smiled.
When Alejandro left the room, the silence came too quickly.
And every time he returned unexpectedly, he found the same scene:
Her mother remained silent.
Marisol rigid.
Veronica is calm.
As if they had just closed an invisible door before he could look through.
One morning he decided to ask Marisol directly.
He found her alone.
Is everything alright here?
She looked up.
For a moment he seemed to want to speak.
-Yes sir.
—Is it safe?
Marisol looked towards the hallway.
That gesture was small.
But Alexander saw it.
—Safe.
Then he walked away.
Alejandro stared at her.
It was no longer just a feeling.
There was fear.
