Eduardo remained motionless before the two of them. Larissa pressed Sofia against her chest, expecting a cruel order. But the girl lifted her face and whispered: “Daddy, I found Mommy.”
Silence filled the restaurant. Eduardo looked at the waitress, recognizing the eyes he had tried to forget. “Didn’t you leave?” he asked, suppressing an emotion that was already escaping.
Larissa shook her head indignantly. “I never abandoned my daughter. I was kicked out of your house, Eduardo. They said you didn’t want to see us together anymore.”
He took a step back. For months, he had believed the farewell letter left on his desk. Now, looking at those tears, he realized that something was terribly wrong.
“My mother said you chose to leave,” she replied. Larissa let out a bitter laugh. “And she told me you signed the papers to take Sofia away from me.”
Sofia cupped her mother’s face in her two little hands. “I asked you to come back every day.” Larissa kissed her forehead, unable to hide her own tears.
Eduardo took his cell phone out of his pocket and showed the photograph of the supposed letter. Larissa paled. “That signature isn’t mine. I never wrote a word of that.”
Without letting go of Sofia, she opened her small work bag. She took out protocols, copies of messages, and proof of denied visits. “I spent months trying to reach you.”
Eduardo leafed through the documents, one by one. They all had dates prior to that night. His voice faltered as he acknowledged how much the woman had struggled alone.
The phone vibrated. It was his mother, asking if Sofia was alright. Eduardo answered on speakerphone and asked bluntly, “Why did you lie about Larissa?”
On the other end, the woman hesitated. “I did what was necessary to protect our family.” Eduardo closed his eyes. That answer confirmed what he feared most.
“Protect her from what?” he demanded. “From a mother who loves her own daughter?” The woman replied simply, “She never belonged to our world.” Eduardo hung up immediately.
Larissa lowered her eyes to the uniform. For so long, they had made that fabric a source of shame. Sofia, however, hugged her neck as if she were carrying a treasure.
Eduardo knelt before them, ignoring all the curious stares. “I was wrong about you both,” he confessed. “I believed others when I should have sought the truth.”
Larissa was in no hurry to forgive him. “Words can’t bring back lost months,” she replied. “Sofia cried for me, and I fell asleep so many nights not knowing where she was.”
He nodded, accepting the pain he deserved to hear. “I’m not going to ask you to trust me today. I’m going to help you fix everything, starting by acknowledging your rights.”
Sofia touched her father’s hand and placed it on her mother’s. “So nobody’s going to send Mom away again?” The question completely disarmed Eduardo.
“No one has that right, daughter,” he replied, tears welling in his eyes. Larissa took a deep breath. For the first time in months, she didn’t need to hide her face to cry.
In the following weeks, Eduardo presented the evidence to the court and supported Larissa’s request. Sofia was able to live with her mother again, under court protection.
At that same table where they had reunited, Sofia smiled again between the two of them. Larissa still didn’t promise to start over with Eduardo, but she would never again accept losing her own voice.
