Chapter 1 – THE CHRISTMAS EVE HE CALLED ANOTHER WOMAN HIS WIFE

“On Christmas Eve, I volunteered for an emergency shift at the hospital and watched my husband rush through the doors with another pregnant woman in his arms. He had told me he was flying to New York on business. Instead, he shouted, “Doctor, please save my wife!”—without realizing the woman standing in front of him was his legal wife, or that I was secretly carrying his child. My name is Dr. Claire Moretti. I’m thirty years old and work as an emergency physician in Chicago. I had been married to Vincent for five years. Before our wedding, he used to wait outside the hospital with flowers, bring me dinner during overnight shifts, and promise that no matter how busy life became,

I would always come first. Then everything changed. He stopped coming home for dinner. His trips grew longer. Sometimes he disappeared for days and barely called. That Christmas Eve morning, he kissed my forehead while fastening his watch. “Business in New York. I’ll be back after Christmas.” I almost told him my secret. Two days earlier, I had taken a pregnancy test. Positive. After losing our first baby the year before, I had been terrified to hope again. I planned to wait until my first ultrasound before telling him. By that night, I was grateful I hadn’t. At 10:47 p.m., an ambulance arrived carrying a young pregnant woman with severe abdominal pain and bleeding. Her name was Vanessa Reed. She was eight weeks pregnant. As I examined her,

she grabbed my wrist. “Please save my baby. We’ve waited three years for this pregnancy.” Three years. The words stayed with me. Then the emergency department doors burst open. Vincent rushed inside, pale and frantic. “Where is she?” he demanded. “Where’s my wife?” I froze. He saw me. “Claire?” I stared at him. “I thought you were in New York.” Before he could answer, Vanessa cried from the exam room. “Vincent!” He turned immediately. “Baby, I’m here!” The tenderness in his voice was something I hadn’t heard in months. I looked at him quietly. “So that’s your wife?” His face lost all color. “Claire, listen—” A nurse called for me, and I stepped past him. “Take care of your wife, Vincent.” For nearly two hours, I worked with obstetrics to stabilize Vanessa.

The bleeding slowed, her vital signs improved, and the pregnancy was still continuing, though she needed close monitoring. When I finally stepped into the hallway, Vincent rushed toward me. “Is the baby okay?” “She’s stable.” He closed his eyes in relief. I watched him for a moment, then laughed bitterly. “When I lost our baby last year, I don’t remember you looking this scared.” His eyes opened. “Claire—” “I called you seventeen times that night.” He went still. “You said you were handling an emergency. I went through everything alone.” “I didn’t know it was that serious.” “You knew I was in the hospital.” Silence. I looked toward Vanessa’s room. “But tonight, she’s bleeding, and suddenly nothing matters except getting here.” He reached for my hand. “Claire, please.” “We’re getting a divorce.”

His expression changed instantly. “What?” “I want a divorce, Vincent.” He caught my wrist when I turned away. “Don’t do this.” I pulled free. “Don’t touch me.” I walked into the staff lounge and locked the door behind me. Outside, he kept knocking. “Claire, open the door. Let me explain.” I sank to the floor and pressed both hands over my stomach. Inside me was the baby I had planned to tell him about on Christmas morning. Our second chance. Tears finally came. “I’m sorry, sweetheart,” I whispered. “But Mommy can’t stay with Daddy anymore.” Then my phone vibrated. A message from my attorney appeared. Everything is ready. I’ll be there in thirty minutes. I had contacted her weeks earlier after finding hotel receipts, unexplained transfers, and photos of Vincent with Vanessa. Tonight had only confirmed what I already knew. Thirty minutes later, I heard a woman’s voice in the hallway. “Mr. Moretti?” Silence. “My name is Rebecca Collins. I’m Dr. Claire Moretti’s attorney.” I closed my eyes. A moment later, Vincent’s voice changed. “Her what?” Rebecca handed him the documents. “My client has instructed me to begin divorce proceedings.” Another silence. Then Vincent asked the one question that told me he finally understood. “Claire hired you before tonight?” Rebecca answered calmly. “Several weeks ago.” For the first time in five years, Vincent had no answer. And behind that locked door, with one hand over the child he didn’t know existed, I finally stopped waiting for him to choose me.
