“The decision falls within my authority.”

Officer Ruiz finally spoke.

“An emergency suspension may be within your authority, but a permanent expulsion requires the district’s disciplinary process and an opportunity for the family to respond.”

Harris looked irritated.

Sarah caught Liam’s eye.

For the first time since leaving the cafeteria, he felt he might not be facing the situation alone.

Then the office door opened again.

Tank entered with his father.

Richard Mercer was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in an expensive charcoal suit.

His silver-streaked hair was neatly combed, and his expression suggested that he had abandoned an important meeting to come directly to the school.

Tank followed him, still holding his wrist.

Harris immediately hurried forward.

“Richard, thank you for coming.”

Richard looked toward Liam.

“Is that the student?”

“Yes,” Harris replied.

“We’re taking appropriate action.”

Tank crossed his arms.

“He went after me for no reason.”

Liam opened his mouth, but his mother gently touched his shoulder.

“Let him finish,” she whispered.

Richard examined his son’s wrist.

“Did you need medical attention?”

“No.

But he twisted it pretty badly.”

Richard turned to Harris.

“What evidence do you have?”

The principal gestured toward his desk.

“Student statements and the circumstances of the incident.”

“Which statements?”

Harris hesitated.

“From the athletes involved.”

Richard frowned.

“And the security footage?”

“The cameras were unavailable.”

Richard looked genuinely surprised.

“The cameras I helped pay for?”

Harris lowered his voice.

“Unfortunately, yes.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Richard looked toward Liam.

“Did you start this?”

Liam met his eyes.

“No, sir.”

Tank scoffed.

“He’s lying.”

Liam didn’t look away.

“Your son took my headphones, knocked my drink off the table, and hit me first.

Four of his teammates came toward me after that.”

Richard’s expression grew harder.

He turned to Tank.

“Is any of that true?”

“No!”

Harris intervened.

“I think we should avoid turning this into an argument.

The school has procedures for situations like these.”

Sarah gave a short, humorless laugh.

“Procedures that apparently begin and end with believing one student.”

Harris ignored her.

He placed a disciplinary form in front of Sarah.

“If you’ll sign here, we can begin the withdrawal process.”

Sarah didn’t touch the pen.

“Absolutely not.”

Before Harris could respond, Mrs.

Collins appeared in the doorway.

“Principal Harris?”

“What is it now?”

“There’s a teacher outside with a student.

They say they have information about what happened in the cafeteria.”

Harris’s face tightened.

“Tell them we’re busy.”

Officer Ruiz stood.

“I’d like to speak with them.”

The principal hesitated, then reluctantly nodded.

A moment later, a young science teacher named Ms.

Reed entered with Emma Brooks.

Emma held her phone tightly in both hands.

Her face was pale, but her eyes were determined.

Liam recognized her immediately.

She was the girl from the corner booth.

Ms.

Reed explained that Emma had come to her classroom after lunch, visibly shaken, and asked for help preserving a recording.

“She was frightened about approaching the administration alone,” the teacher said.

Emma swallowed.

“I recorded what happened.”

Tank’s expression changed instantly.

Harris stared at the phone.

“Students aren’t permitted to record other students without authorization.”

Officer Ruiz raised a hand.

“That concern can be addressed separately.

Right now, I’d like to know what the recording contains.”

Emma looked at Liam.

Then she unlocked her phone.

“I started recording when he took the headphones,” she said.

Tank stepped forward.

“You can’t use that.”

His father turned toward him.

“Why not?”

Tank stopped.

Emma placed the phone on the desk.

The video began with the cafeteria’s familiar noise.

Then Tank appeared on the screen, pulling the headphones from Liam’s head.

Everyone watched him drop them into the spilled milk.

They heard him demand the table.

They saw him kick the chair and knock the juice box onto the floor.

And then they watched him strike Liam before ordering his teammates forward.

Sarah’s hand rose to her mouth.

Richard Mercer remained completely motionless.

The recording continued through Liam’s defensive response and ended as Principal Harris entered.

There was no uncertainty about the sequence.

There was no reasonable way to argue that Liam had begun the confrontation.

Emma stopped the video.

Silence filled the office.

Officer Ruiz looked toward Tank.

“Is there anything you’d like to change about your statement?”

Tank stared at the floor.

“I don’t know what happened before she started filming.”

Richard spoke quietly.

“Don’t.”

Tank looked up.

His father’s expression was unlike anything Liam had seen from an adult in that school.

“Don’t insult everyone in this room by pretending we didn’t just watch it.”

Harris quickly stepped forward.

“Richard, I understand how this appears, but Liam’s response was clearly excessive.

We still have to consider the safety of our athletes.”

Sarah turned toward him.
