Daniel Whitmore had always been the kind of person who made a room quieter without raising his voice.
He didn’t need to demand attention.
He simply walked in carrying the truth.
And truth had a way of making people uncomfortable.
He entered the kitchen with the woman beside him.
She looked to be in her forties, wearing a navy blazer and carrying a leather folder.
Daniel placed the envelope on the marble island.
“Mrs. Carter, this is Investigator Rachel Hayes.””
Brielle immediately stepped back.
“Investigator?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why is there an investigator?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew the question wasn’t for us.
It was for her.
Rachel opened her folder.
“Three weeks ago, a request was submitted to modify ownership records connected to this property.””
She looked at me.
“The request was unusual because the homeowner listed on the documents did not authorize the change.””
I folded my arms.
“And who submitted it?””
Rachel looked down at the papers.
“Brielle Carter.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he might say something.
But he didn’t.
The disappointment on his face said enough.
Brielle looked around.
“I can explain.””
Marcus finally looked at her.
“Then explain.””
She took a breath.
“I wasn’t trying to steal anything.””
Daniel spoke calmly.
“Then what were you attempting to do?””
She looked at him.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
Rachel tilted her head.
“We understand the paperwork.””
That sentence made Brielle quiet.
Because paperwork doesn’t care about excuses.
It doesn’t care about tears.
It doesn’t care about carefully practiced explanations.
It only shows what happened.
I looked at my daughter-in-law.
“How did you get access to my documents?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus noticed.
“How did you?””
Her face tightened.
“I found them.””
“Where?””
“Your mother’s office.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“My office?””
“When I came over last month.””
“You went through my office?””
“It wasn’t locked.””
The casualness of her answer shocked me.
“You searched through my private documents because a door wasn’t locked?””
Brielle’s eyes narrowed.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
“No,” Marcus said.
His voice was quiet.
“You were protecting yourself.””
She looked hurt.
“You really believe that?””
He stared at her.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
That seemed to hurt her more than anger would have.
But I didn’t let myself feel sorry for her.
Not after what she had done.
Rachel placed a document on the counter.
“Mrs. Carter, there is one more issue.””
I looked down.
Auf dem Papier stand mein Name.
Meine Adresse.
Und eine Unterschrift.
Meine Unterschrift.
Nur gehörte es mir nicht.
Mir wurde ganz flau im Magen.
„Das ist eine Fälschung.“
Rachel nickte.
“Ja.””
Marcus trat näher.
“Warten.””
Er betrachtete die Unterschrift.
Dann zu seiner Frau.
„Du hast Mamas Namen gefälscht?“
Brielle schüttelte den Kopf.
“NEIN.””
Rachel antwortete gelassen.
“Was?””
„Was bedeutet das?“
Daniel sah mich an.
„Was hast du im Voraus geplant?“
„Was ist da drin?“
“Nichts.””
„Brielle.“
Sie schnappte sich die Handtasche.
“NEIN.””
Dieses eine Wort sagte uns alles.
Marcus griff danach.
