Then she said, “Rachel is trying to make me look bad because she wants to protect your mother.””

I felt a wave of exhaustion.

“Rachel is our attorney. She has no reason to invent a document.””

“She has every reason to protect the family fortune.””

“That’s her job.””

“No, Daniel. Her job is to protect your mother’s interests.””

“And what are your interests?””

Ashley stared at me.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she walked to the coffee table and picked up her phone.

“My parents are coming over tonight.””

“Why?””

“Because we need to resolve this as a family.””

“We are a family.””

She gave a bitter laugh.

“Apparently not, according to your mother.””

I watched her unlock her phone and begin typing.

“Don’t invite anyone until we’ve had a chance to think.””

“It’s already arranged.””

“Ashley—”

She turned.

“My father has been asking questions about the business for months. He understands how family companies work. Maybe he can explain things to you in a way you’ll actually understand.””

I froze.

“Your father has been asking questions about Bennett Freight?””

Ashley realized she’d said too much.

She put her phone down.

“He was curious.””

“Curious about what?””

“About your future.””

I felt the room tilt beneath me.

“My future?””

She crossed her arms.

“Yes. Your future. The company is going to pass to you eventually, isn’t it? You can’t expect everyone to pretend that isn’t relevant.””

I stepped toward her.

“Who has been telling your father that?””

Ashley said nothing.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen, and I saw the name displayed across it.

*Dad.*

She answered quickly.

“Hi, Daddy.””

I watched her expression change as she listened.

“No, not yet. Daniel is being difficult.””

A pause.

Then she turned slightly away from me.

“I know. I told you I’d handle it.””

My entire body went cold.

Ashley glanced at me.

“I’ll call you back.””

She ended the call.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask since Rachel showed me the documents.

“What exactly did you promise your father you’d handle?””

Ashley’s face hardened.

“That’s none of your business.””

I looked at my wife and realized that whatever answer she gave, I could no longer accept it without evidence.

That afternoon, I began gathering every document I had signed during our engagement.

By evening, I had found seven.

Six were ordinary paperwork.

The seventh was a document I had never seen before.

It carried my signature, a date from three weeks before the wedding, and a heading that made my hands go numb.

*Authorization for Financial Representation and Estate Coordination.*

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

The document appeared to grant another person authority to communicate with certain financial and legal advisers on my behalf.

“Daniel, wo hast du das her?”

“Was?””
