Emily let out a sharp, ragged gasp, one hand still anchored to her massive, rounded belly as if trying to shield her unborn children from the poison spilling from Vanessa’s mouth. “Games?” Emily’s voice was a raw, broken whisper, yet it cut through the corridor with absolute clarity. “You locked me in the service quarters, Vanessa. You told Dante I resigned, that I wanted to disappear. You took my phone, my clothes, my dignity… and you forced me to scrub the marble floors while carrying his children.”
Dante didn’t look back at Vanessa. His eyes remained fixed on Emily, every muscle in his tall, muscular frame locked into a rigid, dangerous posture. The rugged stubble along his jawline shadowed a face carved from granite, but the corners of his mouth trembled with a suppressed fury that threatened to shatter his legendary composure.
“Is this true?” Dante’s voice was a low, rumbling growl that vibrated straight through the polished marble floor.
“Of course it’s not true, Dante!” Vanessa stepped forward, her voice rising in defensive panic as she tried to wedge her glamorous presence between the mafia boss and his humiliated wife. “Look at her! A common girl plucked from the streets, trying to weave a pathetic drama because she can’t handle her place in your world. She probably tripped on those cleaning rags herself. Why would I ever lower myself to—”
“Shut up, Vanessa,” Dante interrupted.
The three simple words held the weight of a guillotine blade dropping. Vanessa snapped her mouth shut, her red lips parting in sheer disbelief. Dante hadn’t shouted; he hadn’t raised his voice above a conversational tone. Yet the absolute, razor-sharp authority in his command made even Dr. Harrison take an instinctive half-step backward into the doorway of the examination room.
Dante slowly turned his towering frame toward Vanessa, his piercing brown eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. The warmth of the golden lighting overhead seemed to curdle around him, casting long, menacing shadows across his tailored black suit.
“You told me she packed her bags and left for Europe three months ago,” Dante said, each word enunciated with agonizing slowness. “You stood in my study, pouring scotch, telling me my pregnant wife had grown tired of the Chicago underworld and abandoned our marriage.”
Vanessa swallowed hard, the bold red lipstick suddenly looking like a slash of fresh blood against her pale skin. “I… I heard rumors, Dante. People talk. I was only trying to protect you from being played a fool by a woman who—”
“You lied to me,” Dante whispered, stepping closer to her until she was forced to lean back against the cream-colored wall. “In my own house. Under my own roof. You made the mother of my heirs wear a servant’s rag.”
“Dante, please, think about what you’re doing!” Vanessa’s voice finally cracked, the polished facade of the untouchable socialite crumbling into jagged pieces of desperation. “We have an arrangement! We have history! You can’t let a pregnant nobody derail everything we’ve built!”
“History?” Dante let out a dark, humorless sound that lacked any trace of amusement. He raised a hand, his fingers curling into a fist at his side as he fought the primal urge to tear the hospital apart with his bare hands. “History ended the second I saw those two heartbeats on that doctor’s paper. You didn’t just insult my wife, Vanessa. You threatened my blood.”
Before Vanessa could formulate another lie, a sharp monitor alarm beeped from inside the examination room. Emily let out a sudden, muffled cry of pain, her knees buckling beneath the heavy weight of her pregnant frame.
“Dante!” Emily gasped, her fingers clawing desperately at the wooden doorframe as a fresh wave of agony wracked her body.
Dante abandoned Vanessa instantly, spinning back toward his wife with a speed that defied his heavy build. He caught Emily just as her legs gave out, scooping her effortlessly into his powerful arms despite her swollen, eight-month belly. Emily buried her face against the solid expanse of his black suit, her tears soaking through the fabric as her hands gripped his lapels.
“Dr. Harrison!” Dante roared, turning back toward the doorway, his face twisted in a mask of absolute terror and fury. “Get in here! Now!”
Dr. Harrison rushed forward, holding the door wide open as Dante carried Emily into the bright, sterile light of the examination room, leaving Vanessa frozen and utterly alone in the golden-lit corridor.
The harsh white lights of the private examination room contrasted sharply with the warm golden glow of the hallway outside. Inside, the rhythmic, high-pitched beep of the fetal monitors filled the sterile air, a frantic counterpoint to the pounding of Dante’s heart. He gently lowered Emily onto the examination table, his large, muscular hands moving with a surprising, instinctive tenderness as he arranged the pillows beneath her head. Every fiber of his being was screaming for vengeance against the woman waiting outside, but right now, his priority was anchored entirely to the pale, trembling woman before him.
