At 9:16 p.m., a dark blue sedan pulled into the driveway.

A man stepped out carrying a folder.

He entered the house through the side door.

Forty-three minutes later, he left without the folder.

I enlarged his face.

I didn’t recognize him.

But I recognized the car.

It belonged to Margaret Hayes.

My phone rang.

Margaret’s name appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“Lauren, I’ve just discovered something about the property documents,” she said.

I sat down slowly.

“What?””

“Ethan didn’t just borrow money from the bank.””

She paused.

“He used a company account to make payments connected to the loan.””

I looked at the recording of the unidentified man entering my house.

“Why would he do that?””

“Because the loan may have been part of a much larger arrangement.””

I swallowed.

“What arrangement?””

Margaret’s answer came in a whisper.

“The board has reason to believe Ethan was preparing to transfer assets out of the company before the audit.””

My heart began to pound.

“And my house?””

“We don’t know yet.””

I looked at the forged signature.

The missing folder.

The stranger in my garage.

The woman who had borrowed sugar every Tuesday.

Suddenly, the pieces seemed connected, but I couldn’t yet see the entire picture.

Then Margaret said something that made the room feel unbearably cold.

“Lauren, there’s one more thing you need to know. The person who witnessed your signature on that loan application was listed as Daniel Whitmore.””

I stopped breathing.

Daniel.

Brooke’s husband.

The man who had arrived at my house that evening believing he was discovering his wife’s affair.

The man who had insisted he knew nothing about the March 14 recording.

If his name appeared on the loan documents, then one of two things was true.

Either someone had used his identity without his knowledge.

Or Daniel had been involved in something much bigger than either of us had imagined.

I looked toward the backyard, where he was still standing beneath the security lights.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the person who had come to expose my husband’s betrayal might also have a secret of his own.
