For the last three months, ever since I accidentally discovered a certified collection notice addressed to Shawn with Olivia’s maiden name listed as a secondary co-signer, I had kept a secret folder on my external hard drive. I hadn’t wanted to use it. I had prayed Shawn would come to his senses, realize his sister was an emotional vampire, and set ironclad boundaries.

Instead, he had tried to siphon fifteen thousand dollars out of Maya’s educational trust fund just last Tuesday, claiming he needed to ‘diversify our portfolio into short-term private bonds.’

I plugged the hard drive into my laptop.

On the screen were dozens of high-resolution scans.

Item one: The forged signatures on Anthony’s credit applications. Olivia had used Shawn’s home office scanner to submit the documents, leaving a digital trail with our IP address—a detail she was too technologically illiterate to understand, but one Shawn had actively tried to scrub when he realized what she’d done.

Item two: Text message logs between Shawn and Olivia.

*Olivia: “If Anthony finds out about the second card, he’s going to divorce me, Shawn. He will literally take everything. You have to pay the minimum balance this month. You owe me.”*

*Shawn: “I can’t, Liv! Aaron is watching the joint accounts like a hawk. She asked me why there was a four-hundred-dollar withdrawal at the ATM near your salon.”*

*Olivia: “Tell her it was for your golf trip. Why do you let that woman control your life? You make the money, Shawn. She’s just a high school guidance counselor. Put her in her place.”*

*Shawn: “She’s not stupid, Liv. Don’t push her.”*

*Olivia: “I’ll push whoever I want. She ruined our family the day you married her. If you don’t get me five grand by Friday, I’m telling Anthony you were the one who convinced me to invest in the crypto pool. Let’s see who he believes.”*

I stared at the messages glowing in the dim blue light of the laptop.

There it was. Plain as day. Shawn wasn’t just an enabler; he was being actively blackmailed by his own sister because he had made the fatal mistake of playing her financial games behind Anthony’s back. Olivia had him wrapped around her manicured finger, and she used his fear of family conflict to bleed us dry.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the counter.

The screen lit up with an incoming call from Shawn’s mother, Evelyn.

I stared at the vibrating screen. Evelyn was seventy-two years old, a retired matriarch whose entire identity was built on the myth of her perfect family. To Evelyn, Olivia was a fragile, gifted princess who could do no wrong, and Shawn was the obedient workhorse whose job was to ensure his sister never suffered.

I took a deep breath, swiped the green bar, and pressed the phone to my ear.

“Aaron?” Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker, tight, shrill, and vibrating with indignation. “What on earth have you done?”

“Good evening, Evelyn,” I said coldly.

“Don’t you ‘good evening’ me!” the older woman snapped. “Shawn just walked through my front door with his bags, in absolute shambles! And Olivia is hysterical at her house because Anthony is packing his things and threatening to call the police! Have you completely lost your mind?”

“Did Shawn tell you what happened at Maya’s birthday party?” I asked calmly.

“He told me Maya made an inappropriate, disrespectful comment to her aunt, and that Olivia had an unfortunate accident with the cake!” Evelyn fired back without missing a beat. “An accident, Aaron! And instead of being a gracious hostess and smoothing things over, you threw a temper tantrum, kicked your husband out of his own home, and filled Anthony’s head with vicious, slanderous lies!”

I let out a soft, mirthless laugh. “An accident? Is that what Shawn told you?”
