Vanessa was describing plans to replace the kitchen cabinets, repaint the exterior, and install expensive new lighting.

“We’re thinking about modernizing the whole property,” she announced proudly.

Mrs. Randall glanced toward me, knowing perfectly well that Henry and I had owned the house for decades.

I approached them and gently explained that no renovation decisions had been made.

Before I could finish, Vanessa stepped closer and slipped her hand around my elbow.

“Just smile,” she whispered through a pleasant expression.

I stared at her, uncertain whether I had heard correctly.

“Don’t correct me in front of people,” she added quietly.

Then she turned back toward Mrs. Randall and continued discussing her plans as though my opinion had never existed.

I stood beside the fence Henry had built, feeling something unfamiliar rise through my sadness.

For the first time since Vanessa moved in, I felt like an unwanted visitor on my own property.

That evening, I found Mark in the kitchen and asked him to sit with me.

I told him about the conversation, Vanessa’s whisper, and the growing feeling that I was losing control of my home.

He listened without interrupting, but his expression became increasingly uncomfortable.

“Mom, Vanessa has been dealing with a lot of pressure at work,” he finally said.
