I remembered a conversation I had overheard three weeks earlier when Robert and Megan thought I was outside watering the roses.
Megan had been discussing potential rental income and the renovations she intended to make.
“When it’s ours, the first thing going is that ugly little sunroom,” she had said.
Not if the cottage became theirs.
When.
That conversation had sent me to my attorney, and the documents he prepared were sitting inside my handbag.
I had not signed every proposed change because I desperately wanted to believe my son still understood the difference between inheritance and ownership.
Looking at him now, I realized how badly I had wanted to believe that.
“Robert, how did you get inside?”
He hesitated.
“The lockbox.”
“The emergency lockbox?”
“Yes.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
Henry and I had installed that lockbox for emergencies involving storms, broken windows, and medical problems.
It was never intended to give someone permission to invite twenty-one people whenever they pleased.
Megan glanced toward the living room, where several guests had stopped talking.
“Robert told everyone this was the family beach house.”
I straightened.
“It is my beach house, Megan.”
She raised her eyebrows.
“Well, eventually it’ll belong to Robert.”
I saw him close his eyes.
That was the moment I understood they weren’t simply borrowing my cottage.
They were already behaving as though my ownership were a temporary inconvenience.
“Family is invited,” I said.
My voice carried across the kitchen.
“Nobody inherits the right to throw the owner out.”
Megan gave a short, humorless laugh.
“Mama, warum rufst du deinen Anwalt an?”
