Then she turned back toward Mrs. Randall and continued discussing her plans as though my opinion had never existed.
I stood beside the fence Henry had built, feeling something unfamiliar rise through my sadness.
For the first time since Vanessa moved in, I felt like an unwanted visitor on my own property.
That evening, I found Mark in the kitchen and asked him to sit with me.
I told him about the conversation, Vanessa’s whisper, and the growing feeling that I was losing control of my home.
He listened without interrupting, but his expression became increasingly uncomfortable.
“Mom, Vanessa has been dealing with a lot of pressure at work,” he finally said.
I asked what her work had to do with pretending to own someone else’s house.
Mark rubbed his forehead and looked toward the hallway, where Vanessa was approaching.
She stopped in the doorway, studied our faces, and seemed to understand immediately what we were discussing.
Then she crossed her arms and looked directly at me.
“My boss is coming here Saturday, Eleanor, and he already believes this house belongs to Mark and me.”
I felt my stomach tighten as she delivered the words that revealed just how far her deception had already gone.
“So whatever happens that evening, you’re going to let him keep believing it.”
