I said, “Michael.”

“Yes?”

“You can’t build a peaceful life by constantly hiding the things that might cause conflict.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He sighed.

“I know now.”

That was different.

We talked for another twenty minutes.

He told me that Vanessa had been frustrated about money for months.

She had wanted the vacation badly.

She had felt embarrassed that they couldn’t afford it.

When I offered to pay, she had agreed because she wanted to go.

But she hated feeling dependent on me.

And Michael had kept trying to keep everyone happy.

He thought he could manage the tension.

He couldn’t.

Finally he said, “She wants to apologize.”

I looked toward the ocean.

“She can.”

“Will you listen?”

“Yes.”

“Can I come over?”

I hesitated.

“Not tonight.”

He went quiet.

« Pourquoi ? »

Il soupira.

« D’accord. »

« Demain. »

« Demain. »

On a raccroché.
