“Not yet, sweetheart.”
He sat beside her.
“What is it?”
“I want to understand something.”
“What?”
She looked toward Anna.
“Why did that woman think I didn’t belong here?”
Daniel followed her gaze.
He had no immediate answer.
Luly continued.
“Was it because my dress was old?”
“No.”
“Because my sandals were inexpensive?”
“No, Mother.”
“Because I came alone and didn’t have a reservation?”
Daniel took her hand.
“None of those things should matter.”
“Then why did she treat me as if I were less than human?”
Daniel looked down.
He knew his mother was not asking because she wanted an apology.
She was asking because she genuinely wanted to understand how someone could behave that way.
And that made the situation even harder for him.
Luly Matthews had never been a woman who demanded special treatment.
She had grown up in a small town where her father worked as a mechanic and her mother prepared meals for a family of six.
She had married Robert Matthews when she was twenty-two.
Robert had not been wealthy.
He had been a hardworking chef who spent twelve hours a day in a restaurant kitchen and came home smelling of rosemary, smoke, and roasted meat.
For years, the couple had struggled to pay their bills.
Sometimes, Robert brought home leftover vegetables from the restaurant.
Sometimes, they shared one piece of meat between them and saved the rest for Daniel.
But they had never allowed their son to feel poor.
They had taught him to share.
To say thank you.
To look people in the eye.
And most importantly, to never humiliate anyone for having less.
When Robert died eight years earlier, Luly had inherited his modest savings and a small house.
Daniel had offered to buy her a mansion.
She refused.
He had offered to hire a private chef.
She refused that too.
She wanted to live quietly.
She wanted to tend her garden, visit the local market, and occasionally walk through the city without anyone recognizing her.
Daniel respected her wishes.
Very few people knew that she was the mother of one of the country’s wealthiest businessmen.
She preferred it that way.
And tonight, she had entered one of his restaurants without telling anyone who she was.
Not because she wanted to test the staff.
Not because she wanted to catch anyone behaving badly.
She had simply smelled grilled lamb.
It reminded her of Robert.
That was all.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
“Yes, Mother?”
“Your father would have been very disappointed.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I know.”
“He always said that a restaurant should make people feel welcome before it makes them feel important.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I remember.”
“Then please don’t let what happened tonight turn you into someone angry.”
He squeezed her hand.
“I’ll try.”
But deep inside, Daniel knew that the evening was about to become much bigger than one ruined dinner.
Chapter 3 — The Security Footage
Five minutes later, the head of security arrived carrying a tablet.
His name was Marcus Reed.
He had worked for Matthews Hospitality Group for eleven years and had never seen Daniel look so furious.
“Sir, I’ve accessed the footage from the dining room.”
“Good.”
Marcus glanced at Anna.
“Would you like to review it privately?”
“No.”
Daniel looked around.
“I want everyone who witnessed this incident to see what happened.”
Anna stepped forward.
“Mr. Matthews, I really don’t think that’s necessary.”
Daniel turned.
“You didn’t think humiliating an elderly woman was necessary either, but you managed to do that.”
Anna fell silent.
Marcus opened the recording.
The first clip showed Luly entering the restaurant.
She stood near the reception desk, holding her small handbag.
Anna approached her.
The recording had no audio, but the body language was unmistakable.
Anna barely looked at the elderly woman before gesturing toward the entrance.
A few moments later, Luly stepped aside.
Then the camera showed two other customers entering.
They wore expensive coats and carried designer shopping bags.
They had no reservation.
Anna greeted them with a smile.
She personally escorted them to a table.
A woman near the bar gasped.
“That was less than five minutes later.”
Marcus continued the recording.
The next clip showed Elen approaching Luly.
The young waitress smiled, spoke with her, and eventually guided her toward a small table.
Luly thanked her.
Then came the meal.
The recording showed Luly taking her first bite.
She smiled.
She lowered her head for a moment.
Then she continued eating slowly.
Daniel watched without moving.
His mother looked so peaceful.
For a brief moment, he almost wished the evening had ended there.
But the next clip began.
Anna approached the table.
She spoke sharply.
Luly looked up.
Anna pointed toward the dining room.
Then she grabbed the plate.
