Chapter 4 – THE CHILD’S DRAWING

“Rebecca?” Luca breathed, taking a step toward the door.

Rebecca stood tall, though she was clearly trembling. She looked nothing like the broken widow Vanessa had described. She looked like a mother ready to go to war.

Lily, wearing a yellow raincoat, immediately looked at her grandmother.

Teresa held out her arms.

“My sweet girl,” the old woman cried.

Lily ran across the dining room, ignoring the shocked guests, and threw her arms around Teresa’s neck.

Vanessa’s face twisted in rage.

“Get them out of here!” Vanessa ordered Marcus. “They are trespassing!”

Marcus didn’t move an inch. He looked at Luca, waiting for orders.

“Nobody touches them,” Luca said, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers.

He walked over to Rebecca.

“You’ve been keeping Lily away because Vanessa threatened you?”

Rebecca nodded, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks.

“She came to our apartment last Sunday, Luca. She brought Frank. They told me if I didn’t sign a document forfeiting Michael’s estate, they would plant drugs in my home and call the police.”

Several guests murmured in horror.

Vanessa laughed hysterically. “She’s lying! She’s a desperate gold-digger!”

“I didn’t come for the money, Vanessa,” Rebecca said fiercely. “I came because of what Lily found today.”

Rebecca gently guided Lily forward.

“Show Uncle Luca what you found in Daddy’s old coat.”

Lily reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. It wasn’t an official document. It was a child’s drawing.

I recognized the crayon strokes immediately. It was the drawing Lily had made for her father’s birthday, just days before he died.

Luca took the drawing.

“Lily, what is this?”

The little girl sniffled.

“Daddy told me it was a treasure map.”

Luca frowned, turning the paper over.

On the back of the drawing, written in Michael’s frantic handwriting, was a series of numbers.

“It’s a bank routing number,” Frank whispered from the corner, his face completely pale.

“No,” Rebecca corrected him. “It’s a locker combination. For the central train station.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

“Michael knew you were following him, Vanessa,” Rebecca said. “The night he died, he didn’t buy that train ticket to run away. He bought it to get access to the private commuter lockers.”

Luca looked at the numbers, his hands shaking.

“He hid the real will in the train station.”

Vanessa lunged forward, trying to snatch the paper from Luca’s hands.

“Give me that!”

Luca sidestepped her, and Vanessa crashed into the dining table, knocking over a crystal vase. It shattered on the marble floor.

“You’re pathetic,” Luca said with total disgust.

“You have no proof!” Vanessa screamed, her perfect hair now disheveled. “A piece of paper doesn’t prove I did anything to Michael!”

Lily, still clinging to her grandmother, looked at Vanessa.

“I know what you did to my daddy.”

The room went dead silent again.

Even Vanessa froze.

Lily pointed to the damp cardboard box she had brought inside.

“Hannah,” Lily whispered, looking at me. “Can you open the box?”

I stepped forward, my hands shaking. I pulled the flaps of the cardboard box open.

Inside, resting on a bed of tissue paper, was a charred, partially melted dashboard camera.

“The police gave us Daddy’s personal items in a box last year,” Lily said, her voice small but incredibly brave. “Mommy put it in the attic because it made her sad. But I opened it today.”

Frank let out a whimper and sank into a chair.

“The SD card is still inside,” Rebecca said, her eyes fixed on Vanessa. “I took it to a tech shop this afternoon. The fire melted the plastic, but the memory chip survived.”

Vanessa’s entire body began to shake.

“Luca, you can’t believe them. This is a setup.”

Luca ignored her. He looked at Rebecca.

“What is on the video, Rebecca?”

Rebecca took a deep breath.

“It shows Michael pulling over on the side of the highway. It shows a black SUV pulling up behind him.”

She pointed directly at Frank.

“It shows Frank getting out of the driver’s seat.”

Then she pointed at Vanessa.

“And it shows Vanessa getting into Michael’s car, five minutes before it went off the cliff.”
