Ashley’s mouth fell open.

“You cannot be serious.””

“I’ve never been more serious about anything.””

She grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the hallway.

“Get out here. Now.””

I followed her through the ballroom doors, leaving the guests staring after us.

The moment the doors closed, Ashley released my arm and pointed a manicured finger at my chest.

“Have you completely lost your mind?””

I could still hear the faint murmur of the reception behind us.

“You just insulted my mother.””

“It was one sentence!””

“One sentence that more than a hundred people heard.””

“She embarrassed me first.””

I stared at her.

“How?””

“By showing up looking like that.””

“Looking like what?””

“Like she just stepped out of a barn!””

Her voice echoed down the empty corridor.

I looked at the woman I had promised to love that morning. Her makeup was flawless. Her hair had been arranged by a stylist flown in from another city. Her dress had cost more than my first car.

And she was furious because I had refused to let her humiliate my mother without consequences.

“You owe her an apology,” I said.

Ashley shook her head.

“Absolutely not.””

“Then we have a serious problem.””

She stepped closer, lowering her voice.

“Listen to me, Daniel. People are recording everything. If this gets online, I’ll be the one who looks like a monster. Your mother will look like some poor, innocent old lady, and I’ll have to spend the next year explaining myself.””

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

“Is that what you’re worried about?””

“Of course that’s what I’m worried about! We have photographs, guests, business associates. Do you understand how humiliating this is?””

“You humiliated my mother.””

“And you humiliated your wife!””

The hallway doors opened.

Diane stood there, one hand resting against the frame.

Her eyes moved from Ashley to me, then to the pocket where I had put the ring.

“What happened?”” she asked.

Ashley immediately changed her expression. Her shoulders softened, and her voice became almost sweet.

“Daniel is overreacting, Diane. We had a little disagreement, and now he’s threatening to end our marriage before we’ve even had dinner.””

My mother looked at me.

“Daniel, sweetheart, don’t do anything you’ll regret.””

“Mom, she called you disgusting in front of everyone.””

Diane’s eyes flickered toward Ashley.

For one brief moment, I thought she might finally defend herself.

Instead, she took a breath and said, “I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable, Ashley.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Ashley seized the opportunity.

“Thank you. That’s all I wanted.””

Diane looked down at her hands.

“I should have changed my shoes before coming inside.””

“Mom, stop.””

She looked up at me, her expression pleading.

“Please don’t ruin your marriage because of me.””

Those words hurt more than Ashley’s insult.

My mother had been humiliated at my wedding, and she was still trying to protect the woman who had done it.

I walked back into the ballroom.

Marcus met me near the entrance.

“Tell me you’re not going to let this go,” he said.

I glanced at the guests. Some pretended to study their phones. Others watched me openly.

“Where’s the DJ?””

Marcus pointed toward the stage.

I crossed the dance floor and took the microphone from the confused DJ.

“Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention, please?””

The room fell quiet.

Ashley came through the doors behind me.

“Daniel, don’t you dare.””

I ignored her.

“I’m sorry to announce that the reception is ending early. Thank you for coming, and please make sure you have a safe trip home.””

A stunned silence followed.

Then Ashley marched toward me.

“You cannot do this! Do you have any idea how much this wedding cost?””

I looked directly at her.

“Most of it was paid for by my mother.””

She stopped.

“What?””

“The venue. The flowers. The catering.

The photographer. Most of the things you insisted we needed.””

Her face changed, but not in the way I expected.

There was no gratitude. No sudden embarrassment over how she had treated Diane.

Instead, her eyes narrowed.

“Why would she pay for all that?””

I stared at her.

“She wanted us to have a beautiful wedding.””

Ashley glanced toward the ballroom doors, where my mother was speaking quietly with the venue manager.

For the first time that day, she looked at Diane not as an inconvenient relative but as someone whose importance she had seriously underestimated.

Then she leaned toward me and whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“So she’s been controlling our money this entire time?””

I had no answer.

Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure whether Ashley had married me for the life we could build together—or for the life she believed my family could buy her.
