“Family?” I looked at Celeste with cold disdain. “A mother who plans to poison her daughter-in-law to steal a building is not family.” “She is a criminal.”
Ramon Villanueva gestured to the senior attorney standing beside him. “Arthur, execute the annulment papers immediately on the grounds of fraud and conspiracy.” “Freeze all joint accounts associated with the wedding transactions.” “And notify the board of directors that the Monteverde family’s logistics contract with our shipping division is terminated effective tonight.”
Adrian’s eyes widened in horror. His family’s small logistics company relied entirely on subcontracts from Villanueva Prime Development to survive. “No! Please, Mr. Villanueva! That contract is our entire business! We will be ruined!” Adrian cried out, turning to me with desperation in his eyes. “Mara, please! I love you! I made a mistake! Bianca means nothing to me! It was just about the money!”
“I know it was about the money, Adrian,” I said calmly, taking off my diamond wedding ring and dropping it onto the floor at his feet. “And that is why losing every single cent is the only fitting punishment for you.”
Arthur, the lead attorney, stepped forward and handed a thick legal folder to Adrian. “Mr. Monteverde, you are officially served with an emergency restraining order.” “Furthermore, criminal charges regarding conspiracy to commit grand fraud, attempted extortion, and forgery have already been filed with the police department.” “Officers are currently downstairs waiting to escort you and your mother off the hotel premises for questioning.”
Two hotel security officers stepped into the suite, taking positions on either side of Adrian and Celeste. “Please come with us sir, ma’am,” the head of security said sternly.
Celeste began to sob hysterically, clutching Adrian’s arm as he stood utterly paralyzed, staring at the ring lying on the carpet between us. The confidence, the smug laughter, the arrogant entitlement—all of it had vanished, leaving behind only a pathetic man facing the total destruction of his life.
“Mara…” Adrian choked out, tears finally streaming down his pale cheeks. “Please… give me one more chance…”
I turned my back on him, walking toward the grand floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the glittering skyline of the city. “Twenty-three minutes ago, you thought you were taking everything from me,” I said softly, looking at my reflection in the dark glass. “Now, you leave with nothing.”
As security escorted the screaming Celeste and the ruined Adrian out of the suite, the heavy doors closed behind them, restoring absolute peace to the room. My father walked over and placed a warm, protective hand on my shoulder. “Are you alright, Mara?” he asked gently.
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the veil lift from my head as I unpinned it and let it fall. I looked out at the vast expanse of Metro Manila, at the lit-up towers built by my family’s hard work and integrity. I was no longer the naive bride hiding under the bed. I was Mara Villanueva.
“I’m more than alright, Father,” I replied, a small, genuine smile finally gracing my lips. “Tomorrow morning, I take my seat as CEO.”
