“It’s fine,” Daniel snapped, his patience wearing thin. “We can do a thumbprint verification on the digital notary app. Give me your phone.”
He reached for my purse on the chair, but before his hand touched the leather strap, the hospital room door slammed open with a loud thwack.
Marcus Hale stepped into the room, flanked by two armed officers from the Metropolitan Police Department and a woman in a sharp gray suit holding a leather briefcase.
“Step away from the patient, Mr. Vance,” Marcus commanded, his voice ringing out like a military order.
Chapter 3 – The Traitor’s TrapDaniel spun around, his eyes flashing with anger. “What the hell is the meaning of this? Who allowed you in here? I am the CEO’s husband! This is a private room!”
Marcus didn’t move an inch. “Correction, Mr. Vance. You are a suspect in an ongoing attempted murder and grand larceny investigation.”
Vanessa went dead white, her hand flying to her throat. “What? Attempted murder? Are you insane? Claire fell! It was an accident!”
The woman in the gray suit stepped forward. “I am Special Prosecutor Victoria Sterling from the Financial Crimes and Homicide Division. Mr. Vance, Ms. Hale, neither of you is permitted to touch Mrs. Vance, her personal belongings, or any financial instruments associated with Vance Enterprises.”
“This is ridiculous!” Daniel shouted, trying to step between the officers and my bed. “My wife has a severe concussion! She is confused! Marcus, you’re just an employee! I fire you! Get out of this hospital right now!”
“You don’t have the authority to fire anyone, Daniel,” I said.
My voice was no longer raspy, weak, or confused. It was cold, razor-sharp, and completely steady.
I sat up straight in the bed, pulling the heart monitor sensors off my chest and setting them on the tray. I looked Daniel dead in the eye.
Daniel stumbled back a step, looking at me as if I had risen from the dead. “Claire… your voice… you…”
“I remembered everything, Daniel,” I said softly, a dark smile touching my lips. “In fact, I never forgot a single second.”
Vanessa’s voice rose into a panicked shriek. “She’s hysterical! The blow to her head made her delusional! Officer, you can’t listen to her!”
“I don’t need you to take my word for it, Vanessa,” I said smoothly. I looked at Marcus. “Play the file.”
Marcus pulled a high-end tablet from his coat and pressed a button on the screen. The high-definition speakers filled the small hospital room with crystal-clear audio:
“Do it again—make sure she stays down.”
Vanessa’s own voice echoed off the white walls, sickeningly clear.
“She’s alive… She won’t remember anything. By tomorrow, we’ll have the account codes. By Friday, the money will be offshore.”
Then came the distinct, wet sound of a wet blow, followed by Daniel’s low, arrogant laugh.
“We’ll say she fell… No. We say she drank too much after the gala and attacked you. You pushed her away.”
Vanessa fell back against the wall, her hands covering her mouth as if trying to push the words back into her throat. Daniel looked like he was about to throw up. His knees shook, his face turning an ash-gray color.
“The Entrepreneur of the Year trophy,” Marcus explained calmly to the officers, “was equipped with an internal, impact-activated digital transmitter. The entire attack, including your discussion regarding the forgery of incapacity documents and the location of the security tokens, was broadcast directly to a secure server at corporate headquarters.”
“No… no, this is a setup! This isn’t real! It’s AI! It’s synthesized!” Daniel screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Marcus. “Claire forged this! She’s trying to ruin me!”
“The digital signature on the audio file is timestamped and verified by an independent cyber-forensic firm, Mr. Vance,” Prosecutor Sterling replied coldly. “Furthermore, while you were waiting for the paramedics last night, Mr. Hale authorized a complete lockdown of all accounts associated with Vance Enterprises.”
“You… you knew?” Daniel whispered, turning to look at me, his eyes wide with horror and disbelief. “You lay there… and you pretended…”
“I lay there and watched my husband kiss my best friend over my bleeding body,” I corrected him, my voice cutting through him like a blade. “I listened to you plan my destruction while I bled on my own living room rug. Did you really think I was that foolish, Daniel? Did you really believe I built a multi-billion-dollar enterprise by being naive?”
The two police officers stepped forward, pulling pair of steel handcuffs from their belts.
“Daniel Vance, Vanessa Hale, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and corporate fraud,” the lead officer declared, pulling Daniel’s arms behind his back with a sharp jerk.
“Claire! Please!” Vanessa burst into hysterical tears as the second officer handcuffed her wrists. “Claire, we were sisters! I was coerced! Daniel made me do it! He threatened me! He said he’d ruin me if I didn’t help him!”
“Liar!” Daniel roared, turning on her as they were led toward the door. “You’re the one who wanted her dead! You said you wanted her life! You greedy bitch!”
“Shut up! Both of you, shut up!” the officer barked, shoving them out into the hallway.
The door closed behind them, leaving a heavy, blissful silence in the room.
I sank back into the bed, taking a long, deep breath.
“Are you alright, Claire?” Marcus asked gently, stepping to the side of my bed.
