Julian, while Diego trusted you. I know they emptied the accounts. I know they wanted to take his company. And I know that box scares you.
Julian put a hand in his jacket pocket.
One of Gabriel’s guards stepped forward.
The tension became unbearable.
Valeria raised her voice.
—Give me that damn box!
Then a glass door opened behind them.
A familiar voice echoed through the garden.
—He’s not going to give it to her.
My body stopped responding.
Valeria remained motionless.
Julian turned around slowly.
And then I saw my son.
Diego.
Vivo.
Standing in front of us.
He was wearing a white shirt, a dark jacket, and his eyes were filled with a sadness I had never seen in him before.
“I’m not dead, Valeria,” he said.
Valeria took a step back.
—No… It can’t be.
The box slipped out of my hands.
Gabriel caught her before she hit the ground.
—Diego—I whispered.
My son looked at me.
—Forgive me, Mom.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
The son I had buried was standing in front of me.
Vivo.
Real.
Diego walked in my direction, but before hugging me he looked at Valeria.
“Thank you for coming to collect the evidence,” he said. “The house is surrounded. Everything they said was recorded.”
Julian tried to escape.
He didn’t even manage to take three steps.
Federal agents entered from both sides of the garden and arrested him.
Valeria took off her glasses with trembling hands.
—You faked your death.
“You planned mine,” Diego replied. “I just gave you the opportunity to prove it.
”
“This won’t hold up in any court,” Julian spat as they handcuffed him.
A senior officer, dressed in a gray suit, appeared next to Diego.
—When there is an authorized investigation for conspiracy, corporate fraud and attempted murder, things change, Mr. Aranda.
Valeria glared at Diego with hatred.
—You made me look like an ambitious widow.
Diego watched her in silence.
—No, Valeria. You did that yourself.
That sentence finished her off.
She didn’t cry.
He did not apologize.
He only lowered his gaze because he finally understood that he had lost.
The officers took her away while she screamed that it was all a trap, that Diego was a monster and that she was the real victim.
Nobody believed him.
