The dining room had long since descended into chaos.

Brooke Mercer stood beside the long walnut table in a tight black dress, clutching a dark wine bottle so tightly that her ankles were white. The crystal glasses on the table trembled next to the pristine plates. A serving platter had fallen, staining the white tablecloth with red sauce.

Claire Mercer looked as if the air had been ripped out of her lungs.

“Tell him!” demanded Brooke in a shrill voice.

Claire shook her head. “These papers aren’t mine. I didn’t do this!”

Brooke laughed bitterly and raised the bottle with a jerk. Claire flinched.

Behind them, Ethan Mercer stood rigid in his dark suit. His expression was a mixture of disbelief, horror, and rising anger. It should have been his mother’s birthday evening. Just twenty minutes earlier, everyone had been smiling, raising glasses, and toasting to life.

Then Brooke brought out the documents.

Bank statements. Confirmations of criminal transfers. Copies of electronic signatures.

Nearly two hundred thousand dollars had vanished from Mercer Home & Design—the family business that Ethan and Brooke had inherited after his father’s death. Every single transaction appeared to have been authorized through Claire’s access to the accounting system. Even worse, several payments had gone to a bogus consulting firm that no one in the room recognized.

Brooke claimed to have conducted discreet research for three weeks. Claire had barely registered what she was seeing when Brooke started shouting: “You wanted to empty the company and leave him! That’s not true! Then explain your signature! I can’t!”

Brooke threw several pages from the table directly into Claire’s face. The papers scattered across the dark wooden floor. Claire stepped back. Her heel struck the shards of a wine glass that had shattered moments before. She lost her balance and fell to her knees.

Seven-year-old Sophie immediately ran to her. “Mommy!”

Claire hugged her daughter tightly and fought back tears, while Sophie began to cry on her shoulder.

“Don’t look, darling,” Claire whispered. But Sophie had already seen it. Everyone had seen it.

Evelyn, Ethan’s mother, stood motionless at the end of the table. A trembling hand covered her mouth. Brooke continued to stand over Claire like a judge. “You lied to us all. You’re a fraud!”

Claire looked up at Ethan pleadingly. But he remained silent. This silence hurt more than all of Brooke’s accusations. For eleven years, Claire had believed that Ethan knew her better than anyone else in the world. But at this moment, he was simply staring at the papers. He was calculating. He was doubting.

Claire reached into the pocket of her white dress because her phone kept vibrating. She initially wanted to ignore it, but then she saw the notification on the screen:

MERCER HOME SECURITY: CLOUD RESTORE COMPLETED.

Schwarzer Mantel. Dunkles Haar. Ein sehr vertrautes silbernes Armband.

Brooke.
