“I wasn’t given the complete file. I was asked questions because of the possible family connection.””

I looked back at the report.

“What possible family connection?””

He hesitated.

“My father’s side of the family.””

Margaret, who had followed us into the hallway, made a strangled sound.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Mom, please.””

She shook her head.

“No. Don’t you dare drag your father into this without explaining what you mean.””

I stared at them both.

“Someone needs to start explaining.””

Daniel looked at the folder in my hands.

Then he took a breath.

“Before my father died, he told me something about a woman he had known years ago. She had a child, and he believed the child might have been his.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She began crying.

“I knew there had been a woman. I didn’t know about the children.””

Daniel continued.

“My father never knew for certain whether the child was his. The woman moved away, and the family lost contact with her. After my father died, I found some letters among his belongings.””

“Letters from this woman?””

He nodded.

“They mentioned a child. Later, when I saw the names in the report, I thought there might be a connection.””

I looked down at the document.

“Then why didn’t you tell the social worker everything you knew?””

“I did.””

Rachel shook her head.

“No, Daniel. You told me you didn’t know anything.””

He turned toward her.

“I didn’t want to get involved.””

“You were already involved!””

His face tightened.

“I was trying to understand what my father had done.””

I felt a chill move through me.

“So you knew there was a possibility these children were related to your family, and you kept it to yourself.””

“I didn’t know if it was true.””

“You could have told me.””

He stared at me.

“I didn’t know you were adopting them.””

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“But you knew she had always wanted children. You knew she had been through years of fertility treatment. You knew she was rebuilding her life. And when you found out she might have adopted twins, you never contacted her.””

Daniel’s shoulders sagged.

“I didn’t know what to say.””

I looked at him.

“You could have started with the truth.””

He lowered his eyes.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, I need to understand something.””

He looked at her.

She was holding her phone so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

“You told me you had never considered adoption because you wanted a biological child of your own.””

He didn’t answer.

“You told me you couldn’t imagine raising children who weren’t biologically yours.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Was that another lie?””

He looked at her.

“I was confused.””

“No. You were cruel.””

The words came out quietly, but they seemed to strike him harder than shouting would have.

“You spent years telling Claire she had failed you because she couldn’t give you a child. You made her believe her body was the reason your marriage ended. Then you met me, and you told me that becoming a father was the one thing you had never been able to achieve.””

Vanessa pressed a hand against her stomach.

“And now I’m standing here wondering whether you have spent years searching for children who might belong to your family while telling everyone that you were simply waiting for the right woman.””

Daniel’s face crumpled.

“I never intended for any of this to happen.””

Vanessa looked at him for a long time.

“That’s what everyone says when the truth finally catches up with them.””

She turned away.

I wanted to feel satisfied.

I wanted to believe that Daniel’s carefully constructed story had finally collapsed beneath the weight of its own lies.

But the folder in my hands was too important for satisfaction.

It contained a question about my children’s identity.

And I needed an answer.

I turned to Rachel.

“Do you know whether anyone ever followed up on this report?””

She shook her head.

“Not that I know of.””

“Did you ever tell Daniel you had seen him at the hospital?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The same evening.””

“What did he say?””

Rachel looked at her brother.

“He told me that he had no intention of getting involved in someone else’s family.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Someone else’s family?””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t know they were yours.””

“That’s not the point.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

He looked at me.

For the first time since I had entered the house, he seemed unable to hide behind his usual confidence.

“I thought if I stayed away, I wouldn’t have to face what my father might have done. I didn’t know what the truth was, and I didn’t want to open something I couldn’t close.””
