“Then tell us what it is,” I said.
Daniel looked at the children.
Oliver had moved closer to me. His small hand gripped two of my fingers, and I could feel the tension in his arm.
Sophie was watching Vanessa’s stomach.
“Is that lady having a baby?”” she whispered.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“Like we had a baby?””
My chest tightened.
I crouched beside her.
“Something like that.””
She considered the answer, then nodded.
“Can we give her one of our books? The baby might get scared when it comes out.””
A few people in the room began to cry.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel looked away.
That was Sophie. Even in a room full of strangers staring at her, even when the adults were behaving strangely, she worried about whether another child would be frightened.
Oliver was different.
He studied people carefully. He noticed when someone was upset, when a smile was false, and when an adult said something that didn’t match what they did.
He had once asked me why people said they were sorry if they intended to do the same thing again.
I had struggled to answer.
Now he looked directly at Daniel.
“Are you our daddy?””
The room went completely still.
Daniel’s lips parted.
I felt Oliver’s hand tighten around mine.
I wanted to take him away from that room. I wanted to shield him from every complicated truth the adults had dragged into his life.
But he had asked a question, and he deserved an honest answer.
I knelt beside him.
“Sweetheart, Daniel was married to me a long time ago.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
His voice wasn’t rude.
It was simply direct.
I looked at him.
“No. Daniel isn’t your biological father.””
Oliver nodded slowly.
Then he looked back at Daniel.
“Okay.””
That was all he said.
No tears. No accusation.
Just okay.
Somehow, his quiet acceptance seemed to hurt Daniel more than any angry speech could have.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Oliver, I—”
“Please don’t,” I said.
He stopped.
“You don’t get to begin a relationship with these children because you’ve suddenly discovered they exist.””
His face hardened.
“I have a right to know what happened.””
“And you will know what is appropriate for you to know when I decide the time is right. Not when you demand it in front of an audience.””
“Claire, they’re children.””
“Yes. Exactly. They’re children. Not evidence in an argument between us.””
Rachel moved beside me.
“She is right, Daniel.””
He turned on his sister.
“Stay out of this.””
“No.””
Rachel’s voice shook, but she didn’t back down.
“I’m done staying out of it.””
Daniel stared at her.
She took a breath.
“You’ve spent years telling everyone that Claire destroyed your chance at a family. You’ve made jokes about her. You’ve blamed her. And now you’re standing here acting as though you’re the victim because she didn’t tell you about two children who have nothing to do with your marriage.””
“They could have everything to do with it!”” he snapped.
Vanessa recoiled.
Rachel’s face went white.
I felt Oliver press against my side.
I straightened.
“That’s enough.””
Daniel looked at me.
For a moment, I thought he might shout again.
Instead, he lowered his voice.
“Claire, please. I need to speak with you alone.””
I studied his face.
Four years earlier, I would have followed him.
I would have gone somewhere quiet and listened while he explained his feelings, his fears, and his reasons. I would have tried to understand the pain beneath his anger. I would have searched for some small admission that he still cared about me.
That woman had spent seven years trying to make a marriage work by carrying more than her share of its weight.
I wasn’t her anymore.
“You can send your questions through my lawyer,” I said.
His eyes widened.
“Your lawyer?””
“Yes.””
“Why would you need a lawyer?””
I looked at him steadily.
“Because I don’t know what you’re going to do with what you’ve learned today, and I’m no longer willing to find out the hard way.””
I took Sophie’s hand and reached for Oliver’s.
But before we could leave, Vanessa spoke again.
“Claire, one more thing.””
I stopped.
She looked terrified.
Not of me.
Of Daniel.
“When you were married, did Daniel ever tell you that he had been tested again?””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Her eyes flicked toward him.
“He told me something about the tests he had during your marriage. He said the doctors had cleared him, and that the problem was entirely yours.””
My heart began to pound.
“They didn’t clear him,” I said slowly.
“His results weren’t perfect. The specialist recommended further testing.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“He told me he had done those tests.””
Daniel moved toward her.
“Vanessa, stop.””
She stepped away.
