“That’s interesting. My wife is naked in your pool with you, and somehow your wife is the one making things worse?””
Ethan turned sharply.
“Stay out of this.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
The two men stared at each other.
I expected Daniel to lunge at him. I expected the kind of explosive confrontation that would make the neighbors gasp and give everyone a story to tell for years.
Instead, Daniel calmly took off his wedding ring.
He looked at it for several seconds before placing it on the patio table beside the wineglasses.
Brooke made a small, wounded sound.
“Daniel, don’t.””
He ignored her.
Then he looked at me again.
“Did you see everything?””
I hesitated.
“I saw them in the pool. I saw their clothes. I haven’t watched all the camera footage yet.””
His eyes sharpened.
“Camera footage?””
I nodded toward the security panel.
“The cameras cover the backyard, the pool, the side gate, and the kitchen entrance.””
Ethan went rigid.
“Lauren, don’t you dare.””
Daniel turned slowly toward him.
“What?””
“Nothing.””
“No, Ethan. You seemed very interested in the cameras a moment ago.””
Ethan climbed out of the pool, forgetting for a second that his clothes were still in my possession. He grabbed a towel from a nearby chair and wrapped it around his waist.
“Those recordings are private property,” he snapped.
“My property,” I corrected.
“Our property,” he insisted.
I looked at him.
“Do you remember when we installed those cameras?””
He didn’t answer.
“You told me they were a waste of money. You said nobody would ever need footage of our backyard because we trusted each other.””
I paused.
“Funny how that worked out.””
Daniel’s attention remained fixed on Ethan.
“How long have you known my wife?””
“Years,” Ethan said.
“And how long have you been having an affair with her?””
“We’re not having an affair.””
Brooke finally spoke.
“Daniel, I can explain.””
He looked at her.
“Then explain.””
She glanced at Ethan.
It was a tiny movement, barely a second long.
But Daniel saw it.
So did I.
That glance told us more than any confession could have.
Brooke was waiting for Ethan to save her.
Even now, standing naked and exposed in a stranger’s backyard, she believed he would choose her over the consequences.
Ethan looked away.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Right.””
He picked up his phone.
“What are you doing?”” Brooke whispered.
“Calling a lawyer.””
Her face crumpled.
“Please don’t do this here.””
“Where would you prefer? Your kitchen? Mine? Or perhaps we should schedule it for next Tuesday, when you come over to borrow sugar?””
Brooke flinched as if he had struck her.
Across the fence, someone gasped.
I hadn’t realized how many neighbors were listening until Daniel’s words rippled through the gathering crowd.
The Tuesday visits.
The sugar.
The coffee.
All those ordinary moments had become something ugly.
Daniel made his call, then stepped away from the patio.
I stood motionless, still holding the clothes.
For the first time since entering my backyard, I felt exhausted.
My hands were trembling.
* Arrivée de l’équipe d’intervention d’urgence. Images enregistrées et conservées. *
