Charlotte and Emily had been inseparable as children.
But their relationship had deteriorated after a bitter family dispute.
Charlotte accused Emily of hiding financial information about their parents’ estate.
Emily insisted her sister was being manipulated by someone.
They stopped speaking.
When Emily became ill, Charlotte attempted to visit.
Richard remembered turning her away after Emily asked for privacy.
Three months later, Emily died.
Charlotte disappeared from their lives.
Now she was back.
Richard stared at the photograph.
“Why didn’t she contact me?”
Daniel answered carefully.
“Because she believed someone was monitoring your communications.”
Victoria laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous. What does any of this have to do with me?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Quite a lot, actually.”
He opened another document.
It contained photographs of Victoria meeting a man outside a downtown hotel.
Richard recognized him.
Thomas Caldwell.
His personal attorney.
The man responsible for restructuring the Bennett family trust.
Richard felt sick.
“Thomas?”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You’re misunderstanding everything.”
Daniel continued.
“Mr. Caldwell has been transferring company funds into several private accounts.”
Richard stared.
“How much?”
“Nearly eighteen million dollars.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“And Victoria?”
Daniel placed another document on the screen.
“She received payments from one of those accounts.”
Richard looked at his wife.
“You married me to steal from me?”
Victoria’s silence answered him.
Police arrived twenty minutes later.
Victoria was escorted into the drawing room for questioning.
Maya remained beside Richard.
Then Daniel received a telephone call.
He listened.
His expression changed.
“Sir,” he said quietly, “Charlotte Hayes is at the front gate.”
Richard stood.
“Let her in.”
Minutes later, a woman entered the foyer.
She had Emily’s face.
The same green eyes.
The same delicate features.
For one impossible second, Richard thought his wife had returned.
Charlotte stopped when she saw him.
“Richard.”
He could barely speak.
“Why are you here?”
She looked toward Maya.
Then knelt.
“Hello, sweetheart.”
Maya ran into her arms.
Richard watched, stunned.
Charlotte held the little girl tightly.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t come sooner.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Charlotte, what’s happening?”
She looked at him.
And whispered:
“Emily didn’t die from the illness you were told she had.”
Richard felt his chest tighten.
“What?”
Charlotte reached into her handbag.
She removed a sealed envelope.
Inside were medical records, photographs, and a handwritten letter.
Emily’s handwriting.
Richard recognized it instantly.
His hands began shaking.
Charlotte spoke gently.
“Emily discovered that Thomas Caldwell was stealing from your company.”
Richard stared at her.
“She never told me.”
“She tried.”
Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears.
“But Thomas controlled several of her medical and financial records. When she became seriously ill, she started suspecting someone was interfering with her treatment.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
“She asked me to investigate.”
“Then why did she refuse to see you?”
Charlotte’s voice broke.
“Because someone sent her messages pretending to be me.”
Richard felt physically sick.
Charlotte continued.
“By the time we discovered the deception, Emily was gone.”
He lowered himself into a chair.
For three years, he’d believed his wife died from an unavoidable illness.
Now he was learning that her death might have been connected to a conspiracy.
He looked at the letter.
“What does it say?”
Charlotte nodded toward the envelope.
“Read it.”
My dearest Richard,
If you’re reading this, then something has happened that I couldn’t prevent.
Please don’t blame yourself.
You have always been a wonderful father, even when business takes you away from home.
But there are people around us who are not what they appear to be.
Thomas has been hiding financial records. I believe he is working with someone who wants control of the family trust.
I’ve placed copies of everything inside my studio.
The key is with Charlotte.
If I cannot protect Maya myself, please promise me you will.
Richard stopped reading.
Tears blurred the page.
Then he noticed the final paragraph.
“And Richard, there’s something about Maya’s inheritance you must understand.”
His heart pounded.
He continued.
The trust was never designed to transfer our wealth to a future spouse.
I established it to protect Maya.
If anything happens to me, she becomes its primary beneficiary.
No one can remove her rights without independent judicial approval.
Richard stared at the words.
Then looked toward Charlotte.
“Thomas told me the trust needed restructuring.”
Charlotte nodded.
“Because he couldn’t access Maya’s inheritance.”
Richard’s stomach twisted.
“And Victoria?”
Charlotte’s expression darkened.
“She was supposed to convince you that Maya needed to be sent away.”
