“She’s restricted to her Gold Coast residence under electronic ankle monitoring,” Daniel said, his fingers gently smoothing the hair away from my face. “Her passport has been surrendered. Two armed off-duty detectives are posted at her front door on my payroll to ensure she doesn’t take a single step beyond her perimeter. But that isn’t her only weapon, Emily.”
Daniel clicked on the wide flat-screen television mounted against the walnut accent wall.
The midday financial news channel was broadcasting a live press conference.
Marcus Vance stood at a polished podium before a pack of howling journalists. On the ticker below ran the headline: *CARTER HOLDINGS IN TURMOIL: MATRIARCH CLAIMS $50M CORPORATE EXTORTION BY SON’S NEW WIFE.*
*“…Mrs. Patricia Carter maintains her absolute innocence against these fabricated, deeply malicious charges,”* Vance’s voice echoed crisply through the room. *“We have irrefutable documentary evidence demonstrating that Mrs. Emily Carter entered this marriage under false pretenses, with the explicit purpose of destabilizing the Carter family succession plan. The alleged ‘fall’ was an orchestrated theatrical stunt designed to distract from a massive forensic audit currently underway within the Carter real estate portfolio…”*
“Turn it off,” I whispered, nausea rising in my throat.
Daniel killed the power with the remote, tossing it onto the nightstand. His hands were shaking.
“She’s poisoning the board,” Daniel said. “She knows she can’t beat the criminal charges if Rachel’s testimony and the toxicology stand up in court. So she’s playing the only card she has left: corporate warfare. She’s trying to trigger a shareholder vote of no confidence to oust me as CEO of Carter Holdings before the fiscal quarter closes next Friday.”
“Why, Daniel?” I asked, searching his eyes. “Why is she so terrified of this pregnancy? Even if she hates me—even if she thinks I’m beneath your family—to poison a child? To push her own daughter-in-law to her death? A normal inheritance dispute doesn’t explain this level of madness.”
Daniel stared out the window at the distant, gray horizon of the lake.

“Because my father didn’t trust her,” Daniel said slowly. “And twenty years ago, before he died, he built a trap that is finally about to snap shut around her neck.”
