Not apologetically.
She gave a light, airy, condescending laugh that bounced off the chandeliers and made my humiliation feel even more unbearable.
“For heaven’s sake, Chloe, pull yourself together,” she scoffed, casually waving my braid. “It’s just hair. It’ll grow back. You’re behaving as though I’ve committed some terrible crime.”
She tilted her head, her smile growing smugger.
“A proper Weston wife knows how to accept a joke and show respect for family customs.”
I couldn’t speak.
The sheer viciousness of her actions seemed to have paralyzed me.
How could another human being do something so invasive, so humiliating, so utterly unforgivable, and then stand there smiling while the person she had hurt sobbed in front of her?
And how could she expect everyone in that room to accept it as a joke?
I was about to discover that Martha had made a terrible mistake.
Because while she was still smiling and holding the remains of my wedding braid, the man I had just married was beginning to look at his mother in a way I had never witnessed before.

Chapter 2: The Special Guest Who Made Martha Tremble
Whispers swept across the ballroom.
“Did she seriously just cut off the bride’s hair?”
“What kind of person would do something like that?”
“That’s assault! She’s completely out of her mind!”
The shocked murmurs grew louder as guests began exchanging horrified looks.
At the edge of the dance floor, my mother sprang from her chair.
Her face was flushed dark red with fury, her fists clenched so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
She marched toward us with an expression that told me she was fully prepared to confront Martha herself.
But before my mother could reach us, Nick finally moved.
The change in him was frightening.
The warmth had completely disappeared from his face. His skin had gone pale, almost chalky, and his eyes had darkened with a depth of anger I had never encountered in all seven years of our relationship.
He didn’t shout.
He didn’t swear.
He didn’t make any dramatic gestures.
He simply walked past me, ignoring the increasingly furious whispers surrounding us.
Then he stopped directly in front of his mother.
“Hand them over,” he said quietly.
His voice was so low that it was barely more than a whisper, yet something about it cut straight through the noise of the ballroom.
Martha blinked.
For the first time that evening, uncertainty flickered across her smug expression.
“Nicky, darling, don’t be ridiculous,” she replied, attempting another indulgent smile. “I was only welcoming her properly into our—”
“The scissors, Mother,” Nick interrupted.
He held out his hand.
“I said, give me the scissors.”
His voice remained controlled, but his fingers were curled so tightly that his knuckles looked bloodless.
Martha stared at him.
Whatever she saw in his expression finally convinced her that he was not going to tolerate another word of nonsense.
Reluctantly, she placed the heavy silver scissors into his waiting palm.
Then, after a moment’s hesitation, she surrendered my severed braid as well.
Nick didn’t argue with her.
He didn’t give her another glance.
Instead, he turned away, carefully laying the long braid across his forearm as though he were carrying something precious and fragile.
He crossed the dance floor and approached my mother.
With a quiet apology that sounded genuinely heartbroken, he placed my ruined hair into her hands.
My mother looked down at it, her expression twisting with pain and fury.
Then Nick walked toward the raised stage where the DJ’s equipment and microphone had been arranged.
Every guest watched him.
He stepped onto the stage and picked up the microphone.
A brief squeal of feedback broke the silence before he adjusted the volume.
Then he looked out across the ballroom.
He did not look at Martha.
He did not acknowledge the whispering guests.
His expression was grave and composed.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began, his voice remarkably steady, “I want to apologize for what has just interrupted our celebration.”
He paused.
“My wife and I were looking forward to spending a peaceful, wonderful evening celebrating our marriage with the people who truly care about us.”
I stood frozen beside the dance floor, wiping tears from my cheeks.
Nick slowly surveyed the room.
His gaze eventually settled on Martha, who had returned to her seat and was shifting uncomfortably beneath the attention.
“Before we continue tonight,” he said, his jaw tightening, “there’s something I neglected to mention.”
The room grew even quieter.
“I invited a very special guest to our wedding.”
A ripple of confusion moved through the crowd.
I raised my head.
A special guest?
Nick hadn’t said anything about an unexpected visitor.
Who could he possibly be talking about?
