My throat tightened.
After seven years of hearing Martha make me feel worthless, someone from her own family was finally standing in front of hundreds of people and telling the truth.
I could barely process what was happening.
Nick stepped down from the stage and crossed the room toward me.
He placed one hand gently on my shoulder, his thumb moving slowly against my arm in a reassuring gesture.
I leaned toward him without thinking.
“Thank you, Aunt Eleanor,” he said clearly into his microphone.
Eleanor gave him a brief nod.
“Whenever you need me, nephew.”
Her expression softened just a fraction.
“Loyalty within a family is supposed to work in both directions.”
That was the moment Martha finally seemed to understand what was happening.
The social reputation she had spent decades cultivating was collapsing around her.
The financial security she had treated as proof of her superiority was being exposed as a lie.
And it was happening in front of two hundred people, including some of the wealthiest, most influential, and most judgmental acquaintances she had spent her entire adult life trying to impress.
Her carefully constructed world was coming apart.
And she had nowhere to hide.
“YOU’RE DESTROYING ME!”
Martha suddenly launched herself out of her chair.
The chair toppled backward, hitting the marble floor with an enormous crash.
She pointed a trembling finger at Eleanor.
Then at Nick.
Finally, she pointed directly at me.
“You’re all working together against me!” she screamed. “Every one of you! This is MY family! That’s MY son!”
Her face contorted with uncontrollable rage.
Her polished, aristocratic composure had disappeared completely.
Then she turned her hatred toward me.
“You gold-digging nobody!”
Before anyone could answer, Martha surged forward.
Her eyes were wild.
Her hands shot toward my face, long manicured fingernails extended like claws.
I barely had time to recognize that she was coming directly at me.
And this time, she wasn’t carrying scissors.
She was using her own hands.
