Robert could still receive support through the estate, but he would no longer receive automatic ownership of the cottage.

It was a painful decision because I had always imagined him watching his own grandchildren play beside the same shoreline.

But I could not reward entitlement simply because it came from my only child.

Ellen also prepared a written notice revoking Robert’s unrestricted access to the property.

I hesitated over that document.

Despite everything I had overheard, I wanted to believe my son might recognize the importance of respecting my boundaries.

I asked Ellen to keep the notice ready without sending it.

Perhaps, I thought, the conversation beneath the kitchen window had been careless rather than revealing.

Perhaps Robert would prove that I had misunderstood his intentions.

Standing in my crowded living room three weeks later, I realized how desperately I had wanted to believe that.

Megan had already turned away to answer a question about dinner.

Robert was quietly asking me to calm down.

Twenty-one people were enjoying a vacation in my home, and no one had thought I deserved an invitation.

I placed Henry’s photograph back on the mantel.

“Everyone needs to leave,” I said.

Robert stared at me.

“Mom, you can’t just throw people out.”

I looked at the suitcases, the wet towels, and the strangers watching our family dispute.

“They were invited by people who had no authority to invite them.”

Megan crossed her arms.

“Are you seriously going to embarrass us in front of everyone?”

I turned toward her.

“You embarrassed yourselves when you decided I didn’t belong in my own home.”

Carol stepped forward, looking genuinely distressed.

“Margaret, perhaps we can find a reasonable solution.”

I nodded.

“There is one, and it begins with everyone respecting who owns this property.”

Robert approached me and lowered his voice.

“Please don’t do anything you’ll regret.”

His warning sounded almost rehearsed.

I remembered the other times he had asked me to stay quiet for the sake of family harmony.

I had stayed quiet when Megan criticized my old furniture.

I had stayed quiet when Robert borrowed my car without asking.

I had even stayed quiet when they suggested selling Henry’s tools because they were taking up valuable storage space.

But the cottage was different.

I reached into my purse and removed my phone.

Robert’s expression tightened.

“Who are you calling?”

“My attorney.”

Megan gave a nervous laugh.

“Are you asking her to book you a hotel?”

I met her eyes.

“No, Megan, I’m making certain I never need a hotel because of your decisions.”
