“Please, Brittany! Those are my pretty curls! Mommy said I could keep them forever!””
The little girl’s desperate screams echoed through the upstairs dressing room, but Brittany didn’t put down the electric clippers.
Instead, she pressed the buzzing machine against another section of six-year-old Kayla’s beautiful brown curls.
A thick handful fell onto the white marble floor.
Kayla stared at it.
Her tiny fingers trembled as she reached for the curls that had once bounced around her shoulders.
“Stop moving!”” Brittany snapped.
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””
Kayla tried to pull away, but Brittany grabbed her chin and forced her to face the mirror.
“Look at yourself. Maybe now you’ll finally understand that you don’t get everything you want.””
The little girl began sobbing.
And downstairs, nobody had any idea what was happening.
It was supposed to be a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
Darius Mitchell had arranged a small family celebration at his sprawling home outside Atlanta. His engagement to Brittany Collins had been official for three months, and the wedding was only six weeks away.
Friends and relatives were expected to arrive at five.
The catering company was already setting up in the backyard.
Flowers covered the entrance hall, and a photographer was scheduled to arrive shortly.
Darius had even bought Kayla a beautiful lavender dress for the occasion.
His six-year-old daughter had been looking forward to wearing it all week.
Her mother, Renee, had passed away two years earlier after a sudden illness, leaving Darius to raise their only child alone.
Since then, Kayla’s curls had become something precious in their household.
Renee had always loved brushing them.
She used to sit Kayla on the bathroom counter, humming little songs while carefully working through every knot.
Whenever Kayla complained about sitting still, Renee would kiss her forehead and whisper, “These curls are special, sweetheart. Just like you.””
Darius remembered those afternoons.
Sometimes, when he watched Kayla running through the garden with her curls bouncing behind her, he could almost imagine Renee standing beside him.
That was why he had never allowed anyone to cut them without Kayla’s permission.
Brittany knew that.
She knew everything about those curls.
And that was precisely why she had chosen them.
Earlier that afternoon, Kayla had been sitting on the living room rug, coloring pictures while Darius finished a business call.
Brittany descended the staircase wearing an expensive cream-colored dress.
Her heels clicked against the hardwood.
“Kayla, sweetheart, come upstairs,” she said.
Kayla looked up.
“Why?””
“Because we need to get you ready for the party.””
“Daddy said I could wear my purple dress.””
Brittany smiled without warmth.
“Yes, darling. But first, we’re going to fix that hair.””
Kayla immediately touched her curls.
“I like my hair.””
“I know you do. But it’s messy.””
“Daddy likes it.””
Something tightened in Brittany’s expression.
She had spent months trying to establish herself as the woman of the house.
Yet every time she attempted to discipline Kayla, the little girl ran to Darius.
Every decision seemed to require his approval.
Every family photograph included Kayla standing between them.
And every time Darius kissed his daughter’s forehead, Brittany felt like an unwanted guest in her own future marriage.
“Your father isn’t here right now,” Brittany replied.
“He’s downstairs.””
“Then let’s not bother him with silly things.””
Kayla hesitated.
Brittany extended her hand.
“Come on. I have a surprise for you.””
The little girl climbed to her feet.
She trusted the woman who was supposed to become her stepmother.
That trust would be destroyed within minutes.
The dressing room was spacious, with floor-to-ceiling mirrors and expensive beauty products arranged along a marble counter.
Kayla climbed onto a cushioned chair.
Brittany stood behind her, examining the little girl’s reflection.
“Do you know what would make you look prettier?”” she asked.
Kayla shook her head.
“Maybe a little trim?””
“No.””
“Just the ends?””
“No, thank you.””
Brittany’s smile disappeared.
“Kayla, I’m not asking you to make a decision. I’m telling you what we’re doing.””
“But Daddy said nobody can cut my hair unless I say yes.””
Brittany stared at her.
Then she laughed.
It wasn’t a kind laugh.
“Your father spoils you terribly.””
She opened a drawer and removed a pair of electric clippers.
The little girl went completely still.
“What is that?””
“Something that will make this much easier.””
Kayla slid off the chair.
“I don’t want it.””
Brittany caught her wrist.
“Get back in the chair.””
“No!””
“Don’t start acting spoiled.””
Kayla’s eyes filled with tears.
“Please call Daddy.””
That sentence seemed to ignite something ugly inside Brittany.
She placed the clippers on the counter and leaned down until her face was inches from Kayla’s.
