For years, people had stepped back when she moved forward. Victor had done it too, more often than he liked to admit.
Not tonight.
She crossed the distance between them and slapped him across the face.
The sound snapped through the ballroom.
Victor’s head turned with the force of it. Ethan flinched against him.
Several guests moved at once, but Victor raised one hand without looking away from Evelyn. The gesture stopped them because he did not want anyone rushing close enough to frighten Ethan further.
Evelyn’s breathing became sharp and uneven.
“You will not speak to me like that in my house,” she said.
Victor slowly looked back at her. A red mark rose across his cheek.
“You hit me while I’m holding him.”
“He needs to see what happens when people disrespect this family.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed. “No. He needs to see what happens when someone finally says no to you.”
The words landed harder than the slap.
Evelyn turned toward a tall floral arrangement beside the cake table. In one furious movement, she yanked loose the narrow metal support leg from the decorative stand.
White roses spilled to the floor.
A woman near the front table screamed.
Evelyn swung the metal piece toward Victor.
Victor twisted away, shielding Ethan with his shoulder. The metal struck the edge of a silver tray instead, sending it spinning across the table.
Ethan cried out.
Victor’s anger vanished beneath something colder and more focused.
He shifted Ethan higher against his chest and caught Evelyn’s wrist when she tried to swing again.
“Stop.”
Evelyn struggled against his grip. “Let go of me!”
“Drop it.”
She did not.
Victor pushed her arm down and away, then used his free hand to force distance between them.
Evelyn stumbled backward into the cake table.
The table rocked violently.
A tier of the damaged cake tilted. Plates rattled. A silver knife dropped to the carpet.
Guests scattered away from the display.
Victor released Evelyn immediately and stepped back.
For a moment, it looked as if the confrontation had ended.
Evelyn steadied herself against the table, breathing hard. Frosting smeared one side of her gown where she had collided with the cake.
Her eyes found Victor again.
Something in her expression turned reckless.
“You think you can take him from me?” she said.
Victor frowned.
The words were strange.
Before he could ask what she meant, Evelyn charged toward him.
Victor moved sideways.
Still carrying Ethan, he pivoted just enough to clear her path.
Evelyn missed him completely.
Her heel caught beneath a fallen strip of ribbon.
She crashed backward through the white flower arch.
The wooden frame snapped.
Roses exploded across the floor.
Behind the arch stood a second display table supporting the largest decorative section of the cake.
Evelyn fell straight into it.
The cake collapsed in a storm of frosting, sugar flowers, and broken cardboard tiers.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Ethan lifted his head from Victor’s shoulder.
His face was still streaked with frosting, but his eyes were fixed on the ruined arch.
Victor did not smile.
He did not feel victorious.
He felt terrified by how close his son had been to someone whose anger had crossed a line he could no longer pretend not to see.
A security guard finally rushed forward, followed by the event manager.
Victor backed away from everyone.
“Call the police,” someone said.
Evelyn emerged from the wreckage of flowers and cake, stunned but uninjured. Her perfect hair had collapsed on one side, and white frosting covered the front of her expensive gown.
She looked less powerful than Victor had ever seen her.
Dann zeigte sie direkt auf ihn.
„Er hat mich angegriffen.“
Ein Raunen ging durch die Gäste.
Victor umarmte Ethan fester.
