But I wasn’t stopping her either.
And that mattered too.
The next morning, I started making plans.
PART 3: MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW YELLED AT ME IN FRONT OF HER WHOLE FAMILY FOR NOT SERVING THEM DINNER, BUT THAT HOUSE WAS MINE
So I did something very simple.
I put that agreement in writing.
When Liam received the notification, he read it twice.
—Are you serious?
-Yeah.
—Why now?
—Because this isn’t working anymore.
His expression changed.
—Is it because of Harper?
—It’s for both of us.
He seemed hurt.
—And what did I do?
That question hurt me more than I expected.
I looked at him.
—You just stared.
During the next three weeks, neither of them packed much.
It was obvious that they thought that sooner or later I was going to give in.
Four days before New Year’s, Harper approached me while I was folding laundry.
—My parents are coming for New Year’s.
—How many people?
—About fourteen.
I stopped folding a towel.
—Did you invite fourteen people to my house?
—They are family.
—They are your family.
But she continued talking as if I hadn’t said anything.
—My mom likes roast beef,
So prepare that. Also scalloped potatoes and green beans. No mushrooms because my aunt can’t stand them.
I looked at her.
For a moment I almost admired his confidence.
-Anything else?
—Dinner is at eight. They’ll arrive around six for a drink. Oh, and buy that chocolate cake my mom likes.
And he left.
He didn’t ask me if I wanted to have guests over.
He didn’t ask me if I felt like cooking.
He did not offer to pay for the food.
He simply gave me orders.
And then I finally understood what had happened.
Harper had mistaken my patience for obedience.
It was time to show him the difference.
During the following days I gathered all the things that Liam and Harper had left scattered around the house.
Shoes.
Shelters.
Books.
Decorations.
Boxes.
Lamps.
Winter boots.
I only packed obvious items.
I did not touch private documents, medicines, jewelry, or work equipment.
They already knew the
deadline to leave.
I was simply making it clear that I intended to comply.
I also recovered the spare key for my sedan.
Then I took Liam out of the family cell phone plan that, inexplicably, I had been paying for for years.
On December 31, Harper left before noon to go to the beauty salon.
Liam vacuumed the house and tidied the guest room.
No one packed.
I spent a good part of the afternoon reading.
At four o’clock I went to the supermarket.
I bought exactly one ribeye.
A bunch of asparagus.
A small loaf of bread.
And a good bottle of red wine.
Nothing else.
Harper’s family members began to arrive at six o’clock.
Her voice changed immediately.
Suddenly she was kind, smiling, and charming.
In less than twenty minutes, my house was full.
I stayed upstairs.
From the landing of the stairs I heard her walking around my house.
—This wall
We can remove it.
Then I heard:
—We want to open up the kitchen more.
Someone asked if they had already bought the property.
Harper laughed.
-Not quite.
I went down at seven.
Brenda, Harper’s mom, approached me.
—Harper says you’ve been preparing dinner all day.
—No. Harper says a lot of things.
Brenda frowned.
—We skipped lunch because he promised us a banquet.
—Then I should probably talk to Harper about it.
I went into the kitchen and closed the doors.
I seasoned my ribeye.
I prepared my asparagus.
I opened the wine.
At 7:45 I heard someone ask:
—What time will dinner be ready?
Harper replied with absolute certainty:
—At eight o’clock.
At 7:55 I sat down at the bar and started eating.
At 8:02 the kitchen doors suddenly opened.
Harper entered.
First he looked at the empty countertops.
Then the stove was turned off.
Finally, he looked down at my plate.
Where is the food?
I cut another piece of meat.
—I’m eating it.
—No. Where’s dinner?
—This is my dinner.
—I’m talking about everyone’s dinner!
I shrugged slightly.
-I have no idea.
Her face changed.
—Didn’t you cook?
—No.
—Didn’t you even order food?
—No.
—You knew my family was coming!
I left the fork on the plate.
—You informed me that your family was coming.
—I gave you a menu!
—That’s very thoughtful of you.
Her face turned red.
—My family is starving to death!
—Then you should feed them.
That’s when he completely lost control.
“Where the hell were you, you useless old woman? My family is starving and you haven’t even set the table!”
The whole house fell silent.
Liam appeared behind her.
—Harper…
She pointed at me.
—You did this on purpose!
