The valet turned politely toward her.
“Mr. Carter’s vehicle, ma’am.””
Victor’s champagne glass stopped halfway to his mouth.
He stared at the keys.
Then at me.
Then back at the keys.
“James Carter?”” he whispered.
I gave him a small nod.
For the first time that evening, Victor looked genuinely frightened.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Why are you reacting like that? You said you knew everyone important in Atlanta.””
Victor didn’t answer.
I watched recognition spread across his face. He knew the name. He knew the companies. More importantly, he knew the people behind them.
Ten years earlier, I had been a mechanic trying to save enough money to rent a small workshop.
Today, I owned controlling interests in three automotive companies, employed thousands of people, and chaired a private foundation that had distributed millions of dollars to education, housing, and community programs.
The Rolls-Royce was the least interesting thing about my life.
But it was the first thing Vanessa understood.
“James,” she said, suddenly lowering her voice, “why didn’t you tell me?””
I almost laughed.
“Tell you what?””
“That you were… successful.””
“You never asked.””
Her fingers tightened around Victor’s sleeve.
He finally found his voice.
“Mr. Carter, it’s an honor. I’ve followed your acquisitions for years. Your investment group has transformed the automotive sector.””
“Thank you, Victor.””
His smile looked painful.
“Perhaps we could arrange a meeting sometime. I have several projects that might interest you.””
“Perhaps.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“We should catch up. After all, we have so much history.””
I looked at her red gown, her diamonds, and the man she had chosen because he could offer her the life she wanted.
“History isn’t the same thing as a relationship,” I said.
Her cheeks reddened.
Then my head of security, Daniel Brooks, approached from behind me. He was a broad-shouldered former federal investigator who rarely interrupted conversations unless something mattered.
“Mr. Carter,” Daniel said, holding out a tablet, “we need to discuss something immediately.””
I accepted it.
“What is it?””
“Footage from the entrance cameras. We identified a visitor who arrived before the guests.””
I glanced at the screen.
The video showed Vanessa standing outside the gala’s private entrance, speaking to a man in a gray suit.
She checked her phone repeatedly, then pointed toward the ballroom doors.
The man handed her a small envelope.
She slipped it into her purse.
Then she said something that made Daniel freeze the footage.
He enlarged the image.
Vanessa was looking directly at the camera.
Her lips formed five unmistakable words.
*“Make sure James arrives alone.””*
I raised my eyes toward her.
Vanessa had gone pale.
Victor looked at the screen and took one step backward.
And Daniel leaned toward me.
“Sir,” he whispered, “we’ve seen that man before. He’s connected to the missing money from three of the charities your foundation investigated.””
I looked at Vanessa again.
She wasn’t embarrassed anymore.
She was terrified.
And suddenly, I understood that she hadn’t laughed when she saw me because she thought I was poor.
She had laughed because she thought she knew exactly why I was there.
I turned the tablet toward her.
“Vanessa,” I said, “who were you waiting for tonight?””
Her lips parted.
Victor grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t answer that.””
I slowly turned to him.
“Why not?””
May you like
He stared at me for several seconds before whispering the words that changed everything.
“Because if you find out what she did, James, you’ll destroy both of us.””
