Most powerful men did not admit that.
They expected obedience.
Not honesty.
“You can call hotel security,” I said.
“I could.”
“Then do it.”
“I will.”
I waited.
He did not move.
“But first,” he continued, “I need answers.”
My stomach tightened.
“About CFS?”
“Yes.”
I shook my head.
“I only saw the badge.”
“But you remembered the name.”
“I have a good memory.”
Roman walked toward a dark wooden desk near the window.
He opened a drawer.
Inside was a black leather folder.
My entire body went still.
I did not know why.
Maybe because of the way he handled it.
Like it contained something dangerous.
He placed it on the desk.
Then opened it.
Pages.
Documents.
Names.
Numbers.
Records.
I could not read everything from where I stood.
But then Roman looked at me.
And said the one sentence I never expected.
“Tell me your full name.”
The question felt strange.
“My name?”
“Yes.”
I hesitated.
“Norah Bennett.”
Roman looked back down.
His expression changed.
I stepped closer without realizing it.
“What?”
He did not answer.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then back to me.
“No.”
The word was barely a whisper.
“What?”
Roman turned the folder toward himself.
Not enough for me to see.
Not yet.
But enough for me to know something was wrong.
Very wrong.
“Your name appears in this ledger.”
The room became silent.
I felt cold.
“That’s impossible.”
“I thought so too.”
“I’ve never seen this before.”
“I know.”
“How would you know?”
Roman finally looked at me.
And there was something in his eyes I had not seen before.
Concern.
Real concern.
“Because this ledger belongs to me.”
I swallowed.
“And why would my name be inside it?”
Roman did not answer immediately.
Outside the glass windows, the city continued shining.
Beautiful.
Unaware.
Then he said:
“Because someone has been tracking you for a very long time.”
My breath caught.
“No.”
“Norah.”
I shook my head.
“No, that doesn’t make sense.”
“It does if you understand what this ledger contains.”
“What is it?”
Roman closed the folder.
“A list of people.”
“What kind of people?”
His eyes remained fixed on mine.
“People who were connected to a business war.”
I felt my heartbeat become louder.
“I’m not connected to any business war.”
Roman was silent.
That silence frightened me more than his answer would have.
Then he said:
“That is exactly why this is a problem.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because everyone in this ledger has a reason to be there.”
A pause.
“Except you.”
The room seemed to shrink around me.
I had spent years trying to become invisible.
To disappear.
To avoid attention.
But somehow…
My name had been written down.
Recorded.
Hidden.
By someone I had never met.
And now the most powerful man in the city was looking at me like I was the missing piece to a mystery he had been chasing for years.
Then my phone rang.
The sound cut through the silence.
I froze.
Roman’s eyes moved toward my pocket.
Slowly, I pulled it out.
The screen showed one name.
Trent.
I stopped breathing.
Roman saw the fear on my face.
And his expression became colder than before.
“Do not answer.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
The ringing continued.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Then Roman said something that made my blood run cold.
“Because if he knows you are here…”
He looked toward the elevator.
“…he is not coming back for you.”
A pause.
“He is coming because he knows something I don’t.”
Chapter 3 – The Ledger With My Name Inside
The phone stopped ringing.
But the fear remained.
That was the strange thing about fear.
It never disappeared just because the danger became silent.
Sometimes silence was worse.
I stood in the middle of Roman Coyle’s private residence, holding my phone so tightly my fingers hurt, staring at the blank screen where Trent’s name had disappeared.
For years, I had known exactly what Trent wanted.
Control.
That was the center of everything.
He wanted to know where I was.
Who I talked to.
What I wore.
Why I smiled at someone.
Why I looked tired.
Why I was quiet.
Why I was upset.
Every answer I gave became another reason for him to be angry.
But tonight felt different.
Tonight, Trent was not just angry.
He was afraid.
And now Roman was telling me there was a reason.
A reason connected to my name.
A name written inside a secret ledger.
I looked at the black leather folder sitting on the desk.
It seemed impossible that something so ordinary could hold something capable of changing my entire life.
“Show me.”
The words left my mouth before I could think.
Roman looked at me.
“You’re sure?”
“No.”
I swallowed.
