Chapter 5 – Vanessa’s Reckoning at the Office
Despite Rebecca’s warning, Vanessa refused to accept that her reign had ended. She sped down the expressway toward downtown, her high-performance German sedan—leased under Aegis Corporate Fleet services—weaving through traffic recklessly.
*Claire is bluffing,* Vanessa told herself, gripping the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white. *She has always been weak. She’s the girl who used to cry when Dad yelled at her. She’s the girl who forgave me when I ruined her prom dress. She will fold. The board won’t allow her to fire me; I know the company culture.*
By nine-thirty, Vanessa pulled into the underground executive garage at Aegis Cybersecurity’s steel-and-glass headquarters. She drove up to the reserved gate and held her silver RFID badge against the reader.
A sharp, red light flashed. The gate remained closed.
*Access Denied.*
Vanessa cursed, reversing and pulling into a visitor spot near the entrance. She smoothed her blazer, grabbed her leather tote, and marched through the revolving doors into the soaring marble lobby. Two armed security guards stood near the turnstiles alongside Marcus Vance, the head of corporate security and a man who had worked closely with Daniel for over a decade.
“Marcus!” Vanessa called out, assuming a practiced, charming smile. “There’s an issue with my parking badge. The sensor didn’t register my card.”
Marcus didn’t smile back. He stepped forward, his expression carved from stone. “Ms. Sterling. You were sent notification of your termination at eight o’clock this morning.”
The lobby was bustling with hundreds of junior analysts, project managers, and engineers. Heads began to turn. Whispers rippled through the reception area.
“Marcus, don’t be ridiculous,” Vanessa hissed under her breath, lowering her voice. “This is a domestic misunderstanding between Claire and me. She just had a baby; she’s emotionally volatile. Call down the Chief Operating Officer. I’ll clear this up in ten minutes.”
“The COO answered directly to Daniel, and now answers directly to Claire as the majority shareholder,” Marcus replied, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. “We have explicit instructions signed by the board chairwoman. Your access to the facility has been revoked. Your personal items from your office have already been boxed and sent by courier to your home address.”
“You can’t treat me like this!” Vanessa shrieked, losing all composure. Several receptionists leaned over their desks to watch the spectacle. “Do you know who I am? I am Daniel’s sister-in-law! I built the brand identity of this firm!”
“You drew a three-hundred-thousand-dollar salary while missing seventy percent of all executive briefings,” Marcus said evenly, pulling a laminated sheet from his jacket. “And yesterday evening, you abandoned your sister during medical labor. Daniel would have escorted you out of this building himself. Since he is not here, I will do it for him.”
Marcus nodded to the two guards behind him. They moved in unison, taking Vanessa firmly by the elbows.
“Get your hands off me!” she screamed, thrashing against their grip. “I will sue this entire company! Claire won’t see a dime of this money when I’m done with her! She’s a thief! She stole my family’s livelihood!”
Staff members pulled out their phones, discreetly capturing videos as the woman who had spent years bullying junior staff was dragged across the polished marble floor and deposited onto the public sidewalk outside. Her designer heels clicked awkwardly against the concrete as she stumbled, her purse spilling open, scattering cosmetics and business cards into the gutter.
Passersby stared in amusement. Vanessa sat on the curb, the cold wind whipping her hair across her face, realizing that the castle she had built out of Daniel’s generosity had completely crumbled.
