Victoria Langford’s eyes widened slightly in absolute disbelief. It was an expression so foreign to her flawless, carefully sculpted features that for a split second, she looked almost human. But the shock vanished as quickly as it had arrived, replaced by a cold, searing fury that sent chills down the spines of everyone watching.
She yanked her wrist back with all the force she could muster, breaking free from Emma’s grip. She smoothed the sleeve of her designer gown with a deliberate, agonizing slowness, never breaking eye contact with the young waitress.
“You touch me again, and I won’t just fire you,” Victoria whispered, her tone venomous enough to wither steel. “I will ruin every single person who carries your last name. I will make sure your family has nothing left to lose, and then I will take even that away.”
Emma didn’t flinch. Her heart was beating like a trapped bird inside her chest, but she stood her ground, placing herself firmly between Victoria and the helpless woman in the wheelchair.
“I said what I said, Miss Langford,” Emma replied, her voice ringing out clearly across the quiet room. “You can threaten me all you want. But you will not raise a hand to her.”
A sharp gasp rippled through the crowd once more. Never in the history of Chicago high society had anyone—least of all a twenty-four-year-old banquet server—spoken to Victoria Langford with such blatant defiance.
“Security!” Victoria’s voice slashed through the heavy silence, loud and commanding. “Get this incompetent creature out of my sight right now! And call the police—I want her arrested for assault!”
Before the security team could even step forward, the crowd parted. A tall, well-dressed man in his late thirties strode into the center of the ballroom. He exuded an effortless authority that instantly shifted the energy in the room.
It was Ethan Vance, the host of the gala and CEO of Vance Global Financial—one of the few men in the city whose wealth and political leverage dwarfed even that of the Langford empire.
“That won’t be necessary, Victoria,” Ethan said smoothly, stepping between Victoria and Emma. His eyes swept over the scene, assessing the trembling older woman, Emma’s protective stance, and Victoria’s burning rage.
“Ethan!” Victoria exclaimed, adjusting her demeanor slightly, though her anger still simmered right beneath the surface. “This girl just put her hands on me! She completely disrupted your event and physically attacked me in front of everyone!”
Ethan didn’t answer immediately. He looked at Emma. He saw the tremble in her hands, the terror behind her eyes, but also the immovable determination in her posture. Then, he looked at the fragile woman in the wheelchair.
When Ethan’s gaze landed on the older woman’s pale face, his expression froze.
His eyes narrowed in sudden recognition. The cool, impenetrable mask of the powerful billionaire shattered completely.
“Mrs. Evelyn?” Ethan breathed, his voice dropping all pretense of formal distance. “Mrs. Evelyn Reed?”
The older woman looked up, her tear-filled eyes meeting Ethan’s. A faint, fragile smile touched her lips, though her hands continued to shake in her lap.
“Hello, Ethan,” she murmured weakly. “It has been a very long time, my boy.”
Ethan immediately stepped around Victoria, completely ignoring the socialite. He dropped down on one knee right in front of the wheelchair, taking the old woman’s frail, cold hands into his own warm palms.
“My God, Mrs. Reed… what are you doing here? Where have you been?” Ethan asked, genuine emotion choking his words. “I’ve been searching for you for five years!”
The entire room went dead silent. The millionaires and politicians exchanged bewildered glances. Who was this woman in the threadbare sweater and the worn-out wheelchair, and why was one of the most powerful men in the country kneeling before her?
Victoria’s face turned an unhealthy shade of pale. “Ethan… you know this woman?”
Ethan stood up slowly, turning back to face Victoria and the rest of the room. The warmth in his face was gone, replaced by a terrifying, icy composure.
“Know her?” Ethan’s voice resonated through the speakers, carrying to every corner of the ballroom. “Fifteen years ago, when my family had nothing and I was working three jobs just to stay in college, Mrs. Evelyn Reed was the benefactor who paid my tuition. She funded the scholarship that allowed me to start my first company. Without this woman, Vance Global would not exist. I would not exist.”
Emma blinked, stunned by the revelation. She looked down at the gentle, frightened woman she had just risked her livelihood to protect.
Ethan’s gaze shifted to Victoria, sharp as a razor. “And I want to know why you were about to strike the woman who practically built half the charitable foundations in this city before her family fell on hard times.”
Victoria swallowed hard, but her arrogance quickly flared back up. “She… she ambushed me, Ethan! She spilled wine all over my dress! She’s nothing but a disgraced old woman who snuck into a private event without an invitation!”
“She didn’t sneak in,” Emma spoke up loudly, refusing to let the lie stand. “She was looking for someone to help her find her way out. And you deliberately stepped back into her wheelchair, knocked your own glass over, and blamed her so you could embarrass her!”
Victoria turned on Emma with pure venom. “Shut your mouth, you miserable little insect! You don’t speak unless spoken to!”
“She will speak as much as she pleases,” Ethan commanded, his voice thunderous. He turned to the manager of the catering staff, who was cowering near the edge of the stage. “Miller!”
The manager sprinted forward, trembling from head to toe. “Y-yes, Mr. Vance?”
“This young woman,” Ethan said, gesturing toward Emma. “What is her name?”
“E-Emma, sir. Emma Carter,” Miller stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead.
“Miss Carter no longer works for your catering company, Miller,” Ethan declared calmly.
