“Some doors cost more to walk through than they are worth, Evelyn.””
I had assumed she meant money.
Now I wondered whether she had meant something else.
A sharp knock interrupted us.
Daniel stood and opened the door.
Vanessa entered without waiting for an invitation.
“I need to speak with Ms. Hart.””
Celeste remained seated.
“You can speak here.””
“This is a confidential company matter.””
“No,” Celeste replied.
“It is an active competition dispute involving a garment shown on our runway. Please proceed.””
Vanessa’s cheeks reddened.
She turned to me.
“Evelyn, the board is willing to offer you a settlement.””
I blinked.
“A settlement?””
“An acknowledgment of your contribution to the gown. A modest financial payment. A revised credit in our internal records.””
“Internal records?”” I repeated.
“You mean the show program that has already told the entire fashion industry Brianna designed it?””
Vanessa sighed as though I were being unreasonable.
“We can issue a statement after the event.””
“You can issue a statement now.””
“That would create unnecessary legal exposure.””
“Then perhaps you should have thought about that before putting someone else’s name on my work.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Do you want to work in this industry, Evelyn? Really work? Or do you want to spend the next five years fighting lawyers over a dress?””
The question landed exactly where she intended.
I had student loans. Rent. A bank account that could barely survive two months without a paycheck. I had spent three years trying to convince people that my talent was worth more than the price of a needle and thread.
Vanessa knew all of that.
She leaned closer.
“Take the settlement. Let Brianna keep the credit. You can start fresh somewhere else.””
I looked down at the contract bearing my grandmother’s signature.
Then I remembered every night I had spent bent over my worktable, my eyes burning, my fingers aching. I remembered the way Vanessa had smiled when she took the gown from me.
I raised my head.
“No.””
Vanessa stared.
“Excuse me?””
“I won’t sign anything. I won’t accept a settlement that asks me to pretend I didn’t make the dress.””
“You are making a terrible mistake.””
“Maybe. But it will be my mistake.””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa turned to Celeste.
“This is harassment. You’re encouraging an employee to damage her employer’s reputation.””
Celeste’s voice remained calm.
“No one here is encouraging Ms. Hart to do anything. We’re asking questions about evidence that has already been submitted.””
“Evidence from an anonymous source!””
“Then help us verify it.””
Vanessa’s lips pressed into a thin line.
She glanced at the photocopy on the table.
Something changed in her expression.
It wasn’t fear this time.
It was recognition.
“You shouldn’t be looking at that,” she said.
Daniel frowned.
“Why not?””
“Because it’s irrelevant to tonight’s event.””
Celeste tapped the contract.
“You seemed familiar with it.””
“I’ve seen thousands of old company documents.””
“Then you’ll have no trouble explaining why the anonymous complaint references a second agreement that isn’t in our archive.””
Vanessa went completely still.
Daniel opened another file on his tablet.
“The complaint mentions a payment made to Margaret Hart shortly before the Starlight Collection launched. It references a private settlement and a missing appendix.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“What appendix?””
“You tell us.””
Her silence answered nothing, but it was the first time I had seen her without a ready explanation.
Then she straightened her jacket.
“I have a show to manage.””
She turned toward the door.
“Vanessa,” I called.
She paused without looking back.
“What did you mean when you said I should ask who paid for my grandmother’s last collection?””
Her shoulders stiffened.
“Nothing.””
“You didn’t say nothing. You said there was something I didn’t know.””
She turned slowly.
For the first time, I saw something like pity in her eyes.
“Your grandmother wasn’t the innocent little seamstress you’ve imagined,” Vanessa said.
“She made a deal with Richard Bellamy. When that deal fell apart, she walked away with money that wasn’t hers.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
Vanessa opened the door.
“Find her ledger, Evelyn. Read the final pages. Then decide who really stole from whom.””
She left before I could stop her.
The door clicked shut.
I stared at the empty doorway.
Celeste broke the silence.
“Do you have access to your grandmother’s ledger tonight?””
“Yes,” I whispered.
“It’s in my apartment.””
“Then I suggest you retrieve it before anyone else learns what it contains.””
Daniel nodded.
“And don’t contact Vanessa about it. If the document is relevant, we need to preserve it properly.””
I stood, suddenly desperate to leave.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
An unknown number.
I opened the message.
Your grandmother tried to expose Bellamy once. They destroyed her business for it. Don’t make the same mistake.
