All around them stood people with enough money and influence to step in, yet not one of them moved. Some guests appeared uncomfortable, while others watched with open curiosity, as though Emma’s life unraveling had suddenly become part of the evening’s entertainment.

Victoria leaned closer. Her diamond bracelet pressed painfully against Emma’s fingers.

Victoria lowered her voice to a whisper. “You’re a waitress. Do you understand what happens to people like you when they forget their place?”

Emma’s stomach tightened. She imagined her manager dismissing her before the evening was over and pictured the unopened hospital bills still sitting on her kitchen counter.

She thought of her father claiming he was improving even though everyone knew otherwise. She thought about her younger sister acting as though tuition wasn’t worrying her.

One choice.

One moment.

That might be all it took to bring everything crashing down. Yet behind her, the elderly woman remained completely silent in the wheelchair.

Emma could feel the woman trembling. So she refused to step away.

Emma fought to keep her voice steady. “If protecting her costs me my job, then I guess it costs me my job.”

Victoria’s expression shifted. Being challenged publicly seemed to humiliate her far more than having her wrist restrained.

Victoria stared directly at Emma. “You’ll regret this.”

Then a voice came from somewhere behind the crowd. It was cold, controlled, and powerful enough to quiet the ballroom all over again.

The man’s voice cut through the silence. “Release Miss Carter.”

Emma froze.

Victoria did too.

The guests immediately turned toward the marble pillars along the edge of the ballroom. A tall man emerged from the shadows as several security guards who had been approaching Emma abruptly stopped.

One of them immediately moved aside. The atmosphere changed so suddenly Emma could actually feel it.

People who had ignored the confrontation only seconds earlier now stood straighter, visibly nervous. Quiet whispers spread throughout the room.

Emma recognized the man only after she saw Victoria’s expression. Every trace of color had vanished from her face.

Vincent Moretti.

His name was recognized throughout Chicago. Hotels, real estate, investments, private companies, political connections—Vincent Moretti was the kind of billionaire whose influence could reach rooms he had never personally entered.
