Meanwhile, I paid for everything. Groceries, electricity, water, internet, and even the gasoline Garrick used daily. I prepared their meals and cleaned their messes, but Sabrina still found reasons to criticize me.

My cooking was unhealthy. My furniture was outdated. I walked too slowly and talked too much. Apparently, simply existing inside my own home was preventing Garrick from becoming independent.

For my birthday, I wanted nothing extravagant. Just one peaceful afternoon surrounded by people who genuinely cared about me.

Clara prepared salad, and Brenda spent hours baking my favorite cake. Everything felt wonderful until Sabrina arrived late, wearing oversized sunglasses and proudly displaying a new Louis Vuitton handbag.

“Nearly twenty-five hundred dollars,” she announced without being asked. “Some people actually understand quality.”

She positioned the purse prominently on a patio chair, ensuring everyone noticed it.

Shortly afterward, we gathered around my birthday cake. Sabrina claimed she needed the restroom, but instead of walking behind the table, where plenty of room existed, she deliberately squeezed beside me.

Then she extended her elbow.

My cake went flying.

Something inside me suddenly changed. After months of swallowing insults, apologizing for things I hadn’t done, and shrinking inside my own house, I felt strangely calm.

Without saying anything, I approached the chair holding Sabrina’s precious handbag. I lifted it carefully, walked across the patio, and dropped it into the brick fire pit, where the charcoal still glowed.

Smoke immediately rose from the expensive leather.

Sabrina shrieked.

“MY BAG! Garrick, your mother has completely lost her mind! Do something!”

Garrick stormed toward me, his face turning red.

“Mom! Are you crazy? That purse cost twenty-five hundred dollars!”

I met his furious stare without flinching.

“Oops,” I replied. “I guess my hand slipped.”

Nobody laughed, but something had shifted. For the first time since Julian’s death, I no longer felt powerless.

Sabrina sobbed over her ruined handbag while Garrick demanded that I reimburse her immediately. I refused.

I believed that confrontation would be the worst part of my birthday weekend.

I couldn’t have been more mistaken.

The following morning, before Garrick and Sabrina woke up, I sat at my kitchen table drinking coffee and checking my online banking.

The account balance made me blink twice.

Something was terribly wrong.

I scrolled through the transaction history and noticed several unfamiliar withdrawals. Then I clicked on one transaction, opened its details, and checked the name associated with it.

My stomach dropped.

I opened another transaction. Then another.
