Because the decision that changed my life had already been made.

Not at the police station.

Not in court.

With me.

I no longer had to convince my family that I had been hurt.

I just had to stop basing my life on whether they admitted it.

On my first night in the new apartment, I checked the lock twice.

Then a third time.

Finally, I lay down in bed.

A door slammed shut somewhere in the hallway. My whole body tensed.

I waited.

Nobody came.

No footsteps outside my door.

No grip on the handle.

No laughter in the hallway.

Only the heating system, which crackled softly, and outside a tram driving through the wet Leipzig night.

I looked up at the ceiling.

The smoke detector was simply a smoke detector.

And for the first time in a very long time, I didn’t need a camera to believe myself.
