—That’s great news, son. Where are they looking?
—On Elm Street. It’s a beautiful Victorian house with six bedrooms and a huge kitchen. It would be perfect for several generations to live in. The problem is, it’s way out of our budget.
I felt my stomach sink.
They were talking about my house.
The surprise she had prepared was going to turn into her disappointment when they discovered they couldn’t afford it.
Unless I could change the way I presented my gift to them.
—Kevin, what would you think if I helped them with the down payment as an advance on your inheritance?
The emotion immediately appeared in her voice.
—Mom, that would be amazing. Are you sure? That’s a lot of money.
—I’m sure. Send me the address and I’ll be there in an hour.
I hung up and sat in my beautiful new kitchen, staring at my phone.
Perhaps it could work better than he had planned. Instead of giving them the mansion outright, he could let them think they had chosen it and help them buy it. That way, they would feel involved in the decision, not like they were receiving charity.
However, when I returned to Elm Street and saw Rebecca walking around the front garden as if she were already the owner, something inside me began to feel uneasy.
I wasn’t looking at the house as a potential buyer.
He pointed at the windows, gave orders, and distributed the spaces with a certainty that made no sense.
And when I heard her say that the master bedroom would be for her parents and that I could settle into the small room at the end of the hall, I finally understood something terrifying:
Rebecca wasn’t imagining a house for everyone.
He was planning to keep mine.
PART 2 — The secret key and the lie that exposed everything
That night I sat in my old house, contemplating the deed to the mansion.
My name was clearly listed as the legal owner.
I ran my thumb over the seal on the document. I had been thrilled at the prospect of giving them that house. Now I wondered if I should give them anything at all.
Kevin called the next morning, before I had finished my coffee.
“Mom, we’ve been thinking about that house all night. Rebecca barely slept. We really think it could be the fresh start our family needs.”
—I understand, Kevin. It’s a beautiful house.
—The problem is that we came back this morning and there’s already another family interested. The agent says they could make an offer today.
I almost laughed.
There was no other family.
There was no offer.
I was the owner.
Kevin was lying to me to pressure me and force me to make a hasty decision with my money.
“What bad luck,” I replied calmly.
—We need to act now. If you really want to help us, we must offer the price
complete and pay in cash.
—That would be practically my entire inheritance.
—Think about the return on investment. Properties are increasing in value. Plus, you’d have a beautiful home and family nearby to take care of you when you’re older.
They kept me safe in the smallest bedroom while they built a fortune with my money.
“I want to speak directly with the agent,” I said. “If I’m going to invest that amount, I need to know all the details.”
There was a pause.
—Rebecca has already taken care of communications and has a very good relationship with her. Perhaps it would be best if she continued handling it.
—Kevin, if I’m going to hand over a check for three hundred and fifty thousand dollars, I’ll talk to the agent myself.
After hanging up, I called the company that managed my property.
—Sarah, I need you to relist the house immediately, with the same price and conditions. If anyone asks, tell them it was the previous offer.
It did not materialize.
—Mrs. Stevens, you are the owner. Why do you want to republish it?
—Because I want to find out how far my family is willing to go to manipulate me.
Two hours later, Kevin called again.
“Good news, Mom! They rejected the other family’s offer. The house is still available, but we need to move quickly.”
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
My own son lied to me to pressure me into spending my life savings on a house that already belonged to me.
—Excellent. Schedule a meeting with the agent for tomorrow. All three of us need to be present to discuss the terms.
—Rebecca thinks it would be better if you transferred the money first and then we would take care of the details.
Of course that was what Rebecca wanted.
