I felt the ground disappear beneath my feet.

My daughter-in-law had not only obtained a key through lies.

He had also begun to impersonate my legal representative.

PART 3: I SECRETLY BOUGHT A MANSION AND DISCOVERED MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW TOURING IT AS IF IT ALREADY WAS HERS

—I never gave her legal power of attorney and she knows that perfectly well.

“The bank employee didn’t ask for documents over the phone,” Kevin explained. “Rebecca got enough information to find out what you had done.”

I poured myself a glass of wine. My hands remained steady.

—So they decided to manipulate me into financing the mortgage on a house that was already mine.

“It was Rebecca’s idea. She said that if we confronted you directly, you might get defensive. She thought that if we made you think buying the house was our idea, you’d feel better about helping us.”

—Help them buy me my own house?

“We didn’t think you’d want to live here alone. Rebecca thought you’d end up moving to a smaller house or a senior living community. Then we could buy it from you for a fair price, and everyone would benefit.”

I looked at my son and saw a man I barely recognized.

—Can you hear yourself? They were planning to trick me.

so that I would give them money for a property that already belonged to me and then convince me to sell it to them.

—When you say it like that, it sounds like a crime.

—Because it’s a crime, Kevin. It’s called fraud.

She covered her face with her hands.

“We never thought we’d get this far.” Rebecca started getting excited, making plans and lists. She wanted to show you that the house was perfect for everyone.

—For everyone? With me locked in the smallest room?

I showed him the recording of Rebecca trying different keys and looking out of the windows.

The next morning, Rebecca called me directly. Her sweet tone was gone.

—Margaret, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.

—I understood perfectly. You’ve been trying to deceive me for weeks.

—That’s a very harsh way of putting it. We were trying to find a solution that worked for everyone.

—A solution in which you received a mansion, I a small room, and, in addition, the privilege of paying for it.

—You’re distorting

our intentions.

—You answered my phone, pretended to have authority over my finances, obtained a key through lies, and showed my property without permission. What part of that was meant to help me?

Her voice changed completely.

“Fine, if you want to play that game, let’s be clear. You bought the house to manipulate us. You knew we were looking for something in that neighborhood. You wanted to put it in front of us and then take it away.”

The accusation was so absurd that I laughed.

—I bought this mansion to give to your family. I was planning to give them the deed.

—Then prove it. Show me the document that says you intended to transfer it to Kevin.

I realized that Rebecca had never believed I could be generous. For her, any kind gesture concealed an ulterior motive.

—I don’t have to prove anything to you. But I can prove that you entered my property without permission.

—Kevin is your son. The family has the right to…

—The family has the right to have its boundaries respected.

You lost that right when you chose to lie and conspire.

Rebecca hung up.

Shortly afterwards Kevin called.

—Mom, Rebecca feels like you’re punishing her for worrying about our future.

—Your wife committed several crimes. She is not the victim.

—Couldn’t we sit down and find a solution for everyone?

I looked at my beautiful house and thought about all the times I had given in to preserve the peace.

—I’m tired of solving other people’s problems at the expense of my own.

For two weeks I received constant calls.

Kevin would call in the morning. Rebecca, in the afternoon. Some nights they would talk together.

The pattern was always the same.

Blame:

“Your granddaughter needs stability.”

Negotiation:

“Just let us live there for six months and then we’ll refinance.”

Anger:

“After everything we’ve done for you.”

One afternoon, Kevin uttered the phrase I hoped would shatter my boundaries.

—Mom, Rebecca is pregnant.

I remained motionless.

-Pregnant?

—She just found out. We weren’t planning to announce it yet, but with everything that’s going on…

It wasn’t just a news story.

It was ammunition.

—Congratulations. I’m happy for you.

“With a baby on the way, we need more space. Rebecca’s nausea is terrible, and she’s worried that all this stress will affect the pregnancy.”
