I told my aunt that I had never authorized Nicole to borrow money in my name or promise repayment from my income. She sounded devastated because she had used part of her retirement savings to help. I encouraged her to request written confirmation of the loan and speak directly with Nicole about repayment.
Nicole initially denied misleading anyone. However, when my aunt forwarded their messages, Nicole admitted that she had exaggerated my involvement because she believed I would eventually support her. Mom finally understood that Nicole had been making financial commitments based on money she did not possess.
I refused to repay the $5,000 because I had neither borrowed it nor guaranteed the debt. Instead, I helped my aunt organize the messages and encouraged Nicole to negotiate a realistic repayment schedule. My aunt agreed to monthly installments after Nicole signed a written acknowledgment of what she owed.
On Friday afternoon, Nicole contacted her former employer. Her manager explained that her resignation had not yet taken effect, but the company had already begun interviewing replacements. After a difficult conversation, Nicole was allowed to remain temporarily while management evaluated whether her position could continue.
Nicole also contacted the coaching company and reviewed its cancellation policy. Because she was still within the applicable cancellation period, she withdrew before additional installments became due. She lost a small administrative fee, but avoided most of the financial obligation she had accepted without planning.
Mom apologized for promising my apartment and savings without permission. She admitted that she had spent years treating my financial stability as a resource available to everyone in the family. I told her that loving Nicole did not require sacrificing my own future whenever my sister made an impulsive decision.
On Sunday, I finished packing and handed my apartment keys to the property manager according to our agreement. Nicole did not come to say goodbye, but she sent a brief message acknowledging that she had placed me in an impossible position. I replied that I hoped she would build a future based on her own decisions and income.
Monday morning, I arrived in London and reported to my new office. The position involved financial planning for an international technology company, and the work was challenging from the beginning. For the first time in years, I could concentrate on my career without constant demands to solve family problems.
