“Clear the ground floor!” a gruff voice barked over encrypted comms. “Find the target, secure the vault access codes, and eliminate any resistance.”

Lorenzo didn’t wait for them to spread out. From the concealment of a marble pillar, his pistol raised with lethal, calculated precision.

Pfft. Pfft. Pfft.

Three muffled shots echoed through the cavernous foyer. The lead operatives dropped instantly, their tactical vests failing to absorb the high-velocity rounds targeting unarmored joints. They hit the marble floor with dull thuds, their weapons clattering across the slick surface.

Before the remaining backup outside could react, Lorenzo slipped past the columns and bounded up the grand staircase toward the east wing. He knew time was running out. If the strike team made it to Valentina’s suite before he did, all chances of uncovering the full conspiracy would die with her.

He rounded the corner of the second-floor gallery just as a heavy boot kicked open Valentina’s double doors.

“Miss Ricci,” a masked operative growled, stepping into the suite with his rifle raised. “Time to go. The boss says the internal play failed.”

Valentina stood by the ivory vanity, her immaculate dress stained with sweat and panic, her face completely drained of color. The realization that she was a disposable pawn in Julian and his associates’ game had finally broken her icy composure.

“I didn’t agree to this!” Valentina screamed, backing away as the operative grabbed her arm roughly. “You weren’t supposed to hit the house while I was still inside!”

“Orders changed the second Moretti locked the gates,” the operative snapped, dragging her toward the hallway. “Move!”

As they stepped out into the corridor, they found their path blocked.

Lorenzo stood ten feet away, his pistol leveled squarely at the operative’s chest. The ambient wall sconces cast sharp highlights across the rugged stubble of his jaw and the dark, unyielding fury in his eyes.

“Let her go,” Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

The operative froze, instantly shifting his rifle barrel toward Lorenzo, but he was half a beat too slow. Lorenzo’s shot caught the man cleanly in the shoulder, spinning him around and sending his rifle clattering to the floor. Valentina shrieked, falling to her knees against the silk drapes as the wounded operative collapsed unconscious beside her.

Lorenzo walked forward slowly, standing directly over his terrified, trembling future wife.

“You wanted everything to be yours, Valentina,” Lorenzo said softly, looking down at her. “Tell me… how much did Julian promise you once my body was cold?”

Valentina looked up, tears finally spilling over her lashes, realizing that her empire of lies had completely crumbled to dust.

Chapter 5 – The Turning Point

Valentina clutched the hem of her ivory dress, her knuckles white against the silk. The bravado that had sustained her through months of secret phone calls and cold-blooded plotting had completely evaporated, leaving behind a terrified woman staring into the abyss of her own making.

“I didn’t want you dead, Lorenzo,” she whispered, her voice shaking violently as she looked up from the floor. “I swear to God, I only wanted you out of the picture. Julian said… Julian said we could force a buyout, restructure the holdings, and push you out legally after the wedding merger. The accident on the mountain road… that was supposed to just scare you into slowing down!”

Lorenzo didn’t lower his weapon. His eyes were like chipped obsidian, reflecting the dim emergency lighting of the corridor. “And threatening a six-year-old child? Pouring water on her mother? Was that part of your legal restructuring plan, Valentina?”

“She heard too much!” Valentina cried out, her voice cracking with hysteria. “If Sophia went to you, everything would have collapsed before we even signed the transfer papers! I panicked, Lorenzo. Anyone would panic!”

“No,” Lorenzo said coldly, stepping closer until the muzzle of his gun was inches from her face. “Only monsters panic by destroying the innocent. You made your choice the moment you decided my life—and the lives of the people who work under my roof—were mere currency for your greed.”

Before Valentina could reply, a sudden, heavy crash echoed from the western end of the corridor. Marco’s voice blared over the tactical comms channel, laced with adrenaline and urgency.

“Boss! We’ve got a second breach team attempting to tunnel through the subterranean utility access! They’re trying to hit the lower holding cells where Sophia and Lena are secured!”

Lorenzo’s blood ran cold. The primary assault in the foyer was a diversion. The real objective all along had been eliminating the witnesses—Sophia and the little girl.

“Hold the line, Marco! Do not let them breach that door!” Lorenzo barked into his shoulder mic.
