Now she watched Emma hug a woman whose face appeared in the family photographs Daniel had kept hidden.
Grace turned to her.
“Lily?”
The girl froze.
Grace slowly approached.
“I’m your mom.”
Lily’s lips trembled.
She looked at Daniel.
He nodded through his tears.
Lily began to cry.
Grace opened her arms.
And for the first time in eighteen years, she held her two daughters close to her.
But the third was still missing.
CHAPTER 8: THE STERLING
MANOR GIRL Olivia was in the old greenhouse, looking through the covered windowss of rain.
The security guards searched the garden.
Her grandfather had ordered that she be locked up in the property.
Victoria was arguing with him inside the manor.
Olivia could hear their agitated voices through the open doors of the terrace.
His phone vibrated.
Catherine Hale had just sent him a message.
GO TO THE EAST SERVICE DOOR.
Olivia looked towards the exit.
A black vehicle was waiting on the other side of the property.
Two guards were near the main alley.
She took a deep breath.
Then she grabbed a gardening apron and put it on over her expensive clothes.
She found an old cap hanging by the door.
With her hair hidden underneath, she looked like a maintenance worker.
Olivia went out.
The guards gave him a brief glance.
She kept her head down.
One of them shouted,
“Hey!”
Olivia held her breath.
“Where are you going?”
She pointed to the tool shed.
“Mr. Sterling asked for fertilizer.”
The guard frowned.
Then his radio crackled.
Someone was calling him to the house.
He motioned for her to continue.
Olivia quickly crossed the garden.
She reached the back door.
A woman got out of the black vehicle.
Catherine Hale.
“Olivia?”
The young girl nodded.
Catherine opened the door.
“Go up.”
Olivia entered.
The vehicle sped up and drove away.
For several minutes, she said nothing.
Then she looked at Catherine.
“Emma is really my sister?”
Catherine nodded.
“Yes.”
Olivia began to cry.
“And Lily?”
“Your twin.”
Olivia looked out the window.
For eighteen years, she had believed herself to be an only child.
Now she had two sisters.
A real mother.
A real father.
A whole family that had been torn from him.
“Will they love me?”
Catherine looked at her.
“Olivia… The
voice of the young fillIt broke.
“What if they hate me because I grew up with the people who hurt them?”
Catherine reached out and gently put her fingers on his.
“They’ve been waiting for you for much longer than you imagine.”
Olivia put a hand to her mouth.
And for the first time in her life, she began to believe that, somewhere beyond Sterling Manor, there might be a place to which she really belonged.
CHAPTER 9: THE MAN BEHIND THE FIRE
Jonathan Sterling arrived at the underground facilities shortly before sunset.
Eight armed private security guards accompanied him.
He wore a dark coat.
Her silver hair was neatly styled.
His expression was calm.
He looked more like a businessman arriving at a management meeting than a man responsible for decades of suffering.
When he entered the medical wing, Emma instinctively placed herself in front of Lily.
Grace stood by her daughters.
Vincent faced Jonathan.
“It’s over.”
Jonathan smiled.
“Vincent.
”
He looked around him.
“Are you still convinced that money can solve everything?”
Vincent’s expression hardens.
“These facilities will close.”
Jonathan let out a laugh.
“You don’t own everything under this building.”
“My family owned the factory.”
“Your father understood business better than you.”
Vincent took a step forward.
“My father was a criminal.”
Jonathan’s smile disappeared.
“Your father was pragmatic.”
Emma stared at him.
“Where’s my sister?”
Jonathan looked at her.
“Which one?”
Emma’s anger grows.
“The little girl you stole.”
Jonathan smiled.
“You’re talking about Olivia.”
Grace stepped forward.
“Where is she?”
Jonathan ignored him.
He looked at Daniel.
“Are you still alive, Carter?”
Daniel tried to straighten up.
“You destroyed eleven families.”
Jonathan shrugged.
“Accidents happen.”
Emma felt nauseous.
“These were not accidents.”
Jonathan stared at her.
“Young people still think that the world is divided into heroes and villains.”
He adjusted his coat.
“Your father understood that real life was more complicated.”
Daniel’s expression hardens.
“I understood that you were murdering people.”
Jonathan’s eyes narrowed.
He slipped a hand inside his coat.
Julian reacts immediately.
“Keep your hands in plain sight.”
Jonathan slowly pulled out a small black remote.
Catherine’s face changed.
“Don’t do that.”
Vincent frowned.
“What is it?”
Jonathan looked down the hallway.
“The last thing your father had installed before we closed the factory.”
A red light flashed.
Catherine stepped forward.
“Jonathan, there are patients here.”
He smiles.
“So maybe you should all have kept quiet.”
He pressed a button.
A mechanical alarm sounds.
