Heavy security doors began to descend over the entrances to the corridors.
A computer voice announced an emergency lockdown.
Julian ran to the control panel.
The screen flashed red.
ACCESS DENIED.
Catherine looked at him in horror.
“He activated the destruction protocol.”
Emma felt her stomach knot.
“What does this mean?”
Catherine looked at the ventilation ducts.
“This means that the lower level will be flooded with firefighting foam and the electronic archive will be destroyed.”
Vincent turned back to Jonathan.
“You’re going to kill everyone here.”
Jonathan’s expression remained icy.
“Then perhaps you will finally understand why your father never tolerated us leaving witnesses behind.”
A voice rings out at the end of the hallway.
“Let go of that remote.”
Everyone turned around.
A tall man stood under the emergency lights.

He had dark hair, gray eyes, and a thin scar near his temple.
Vincent stared at him.
Something on her face looked terribly familiar.
Jonathan’s expression changed.
“You… The
man stepped forward.
“Hello, Jonathan.”
Vincent looked at him.
“Who are you?”
The stranger turned to him.
His eyes filled with emotion.
“Hi, Vince.”
Vincent held his breath.
Only one person had called him that when he was a child.
His little brother.
“Adrian?”
The man nodded.
“It’s me.”
Vincent stared at him.
For thirty-six years, he had believed that Adrian had died in a boating accident.
He remembered the funeral.
Of the little coffin.
Of his mother’s sorrow.
And now Adrian was standing in front of him.
Alive.
Jonathan raised the remote control.
Adrian showed a small electronic device.
“Don’t even think about it.

”
He pressed a button.
The alarm stopped.
The security doors came to a stop.
The control panel turned green.
EMERGENCY OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.
Jonathan looked at him in horror.
“How?”
Adrian stared at him.
“Because I helped rebuild this system while your men thought I was just another engineer.”
Vincent approached.
“Were you here?”
Adrian nodded.
“For years.”
Jonathan’s face distorted in anger.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Adrian’s expression hardens.
“That’s what your men told me when I was seven years old.”
Julian took action.
He slapped Jonathan’s wrist and snatched the remote control from him.
Two security guards overpowered the old man.
Jonathan struggled.
“YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO YOU’RE DEALING WITH!”
Adrian looked at him.
“Actually, it is.”
He slipped a hand into his jacket.
A small encrypted storage unit rested in his palm.

Jonathan stopped moving.
Adrian lifted her.
“All Bluebird payments.”
He took a step towards him.
“All medical records falsified.”
Another step.
“All illegal adoptions.”
The face of Jonathan lost all color.
Adrian continued.
“And the original recordings from the security cameras, from the night you ordered the factory to be burned.”
For the first time, Jonathan Sterling seemed to be scared.
In the distance, sirens began to sound.
Adrian looked at Vincent.
“Federal investigators are already on their way.”
Jonathan stared at him.
“You can never prove that I authorized anything.”
Adrian smiled joylessly.
“Then you’ll have plenty of time to explain this recording where you can hear your own voice giving the order.”
Jonathan ceased to resist.
And at that moment, the empire he had spent fifty years building began to crumble.
