Mom lifted one hand.
“I have spent most of my life allowing rude people to finish talking.”
Then she looked at all three of them.
“I don’t intend to do that tonight.”
She unlocked her front door.
“But if you want to explain why somebody forged my name, you may come inside.”
Stephanie’s father followed.
Her mother looked horrified.
Stephanie looked furious.
I entered last.
Before closing the door, I saw another car turning onto the gravel drive.
Dark blue.
Familiar.
Thomas Avery had told me he would come if he could.
The car stopped.
An elderly man stepped out carrying a leather briefcase.
Stephanie’s father saw him through the window.
And for the first time since I discovered the plan, genuine fear appeared on his face.
