PART 1 SUMMARY: At a family dinner, Claire is publicly accused of stealing money and destroying her marriage, while her sister-in-law Brooke humiliates her in front of everyone. But a forgotten phone notification exposes one detail Brooke never expected anyone to see.
The dining room had already descended into chaos.
Brooke Mercer stood beside the long walnut table in a fitted black dress, gripping a dark wine bottle so tightly her knuckles had gone pale. Crystal glasses trembled beside untouched plates. A serving bowl had been knocked sideways, staining the white tablecloth with red sauce.
Across from her, Claire Mercer looked as though someone had torn the air from her lungs.
“Tell him,” Brooke demanded.
Claire shook her head. “Those papers aren’t mine.”
Brooke laughed bitterly and lifted the bottle in one sharp motion.
Claire flinched.
Behind them, Ethan Mercer stood rigid in his dark suit, his expression trapped somewhere between disbelief and fury.
It had been his mother’s birthday dinner. Twenty minutes earlier, everyone had been smiling.
Then Brooke had produced the documents.
Bank records.
Wire confirmations.
Copies of electronic signatures.
Nearly two hundred thousand dollars had disappeared from Mercer Home & Design, the family business Ethan had inherited with Brooke after their father died.
Every transfer appeared to have been authorized through Claire’s accounting credentials.
Worse, several payments had gone to a consulting company none of them recognized.
Brooke claimed she had spent three weeks investigating quietly.
Claire had barely understood what she was looking at before Brooke began shouting.
“You were going to drain the company and leave him.”
“That’s not true.”
“Then explain your signature.”
“I can’t!”
Brooke swept several pages from the table and hurled them toward Claire.
The papers scattered across the dark wood floor.
Claire stepped backward.
Her heel struck broken glass from a wineglass that had shattered moments earlier.
She lost her balance and dropped to her knees.
Seven-year-old Sophie immediately ran to her.
“Mommy!”
Claire caught her daughter against her side, fighting tears as Sophie began crying too.
“Don’t look at them,” Claire whispered.
But Sophie already had.
Everyone had.
Ethan’s mother, Evelyn, sat motionless near the end of the table, one trembling hand covering her mouth.
Brooke remained standing over Claire.
“You’ve lied to all of us.”
Claire looked up at Ethan.
He said nothing.
That silence hurt worse than Brooke’s accusations.
For eleven years, Claire had believed Ethan knew her better than anyone.
Yet now he was staring at those papers.
Calculating.
Questioning.
Claire reached into the pocket of her white dress because her phone had begun vibrating repeatedly.
She almost ignored it.
Then she saw the notification.
MERCER HOME SECURITY — CLOUD RECOVERY COMPLETE.
Her breath caught.
Two days earlier, their home security system had malfunctioned after someone reset the router. Claire had requested a cloud restoration because one of the missing camera feeds covered the upstairs office where she kept her work laptop.
She opened the restored footage.
The date in the corner made her blood run cold.
March 14.
2:17 a.m.
Claire had been in Chicago that night visiting her hospitalized aunt.
Ethan had taken Sophie to his mother’s house.
Their home should have been empty.
But someone entered the upstairs office.
Claire enlarged the video.
A woman appeared.
Black coat.
Dark hair.
A familiar silver bracelet.
Brooke.
Claire stopped breathing.
The footage showed Brooke sitting at Claire’s desk.
Opening Claire’s laptop.
Then reaching into her purse and removing something that looked like a small flash drive.
“Ethan.”
He barely seemed to hear her.
Claire held out the phone.
“Look.”
Something in her voice made him move.
He crossed the room, took the phone, and watched.
His face changed almost immediately.
Confusion disappeared.
His jaw hardened.
He replayed the recording.
Once.
Twice.
Brooke saw the screen.
The wine bottle lowered slowly.
“That proves nothing.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What were you doing in my house at two in the morning?”
“I came to get something.”
“With Claire’s laptop open?”
Brooke stepped back.
“Ethan, listen—”
His hand moved before Claire could react.
The slap cracked through the dining room.
Brooke’s head snapped sideways.
She staggered into the table, one hand flying to her cheek.
Sophie screamed.
Claire instinctively covered her daughter’s face against her shoulder.
Ethan stood frozen afterward, staring at his own hand as though he could not believe what he had done.
Brooke slowly turned toward him.
There was shock in her expression.
But beneath it was something else.
Fear.
Then the recovered security video continued playing.
Ethan looked back at the phone.
Brooke had not been alone that night.
Another figure entered the office several seconds later.
An older woman.
She closed the door behind herself, approached Brooke, and placed a stack of papers beside Claire’s laptop.
Ethan enlarged the frame.
Claire heard him inhale.
At the end of the table, Evelyn Mercer went completely still.
Because the second woman on the recording was Ethan and Brooke’s mother.
