PART 2 SUMMARY: Evelyn insists the midnight footage has an innocent explanation, but Claire realizes the missing money may be only part of the betrayal. Then Sophie reveals that someone has been using her to carry messages without her understanding.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Evelyn finally rose from her chair. “There is an explanation.”
Claire remained on the floor with Sophie pressed against her. “Then give us one.”
Brooke’s cheek had reddened where Ethan struck her. He looked sick with regret, but he did not approach his sister again. His attention had shifted entirely to their mother.
Evelyn straightened her shoulders. “Brooke told me Claire was mishandling company accounts. We went looking for proof.”
“At two seventeen in the morning?” Ethan asked.
“We knew you wouldn’t understand.”
Claire gave a hollow laugh. “You broke into my office because you thought I was dishonest?”
Evelyn’s gaze hardened. “It’s a family company.”
“It’s my house.”
“And those transfers came from your login.”
That silenced the room.
Even Claire could not deny it. The recovered footage proved Brooke had accessed her laptop, but it did not prove she had made the transfers. Ethan immediately photographed every document Brooke had thrown down and placed Claire’s phone in his pocket.
“Nobody touches anything else,” he said.
Brooke stared at him. “You’re choosing her?”
“I’m choosing evidence.”
The distinction hurt Claire more than she expected.
She stood carefully, keeping Sophie beside her. Broken glass glittered around her shoes.
Then Sophie tugged at her hand.
“Mom?”
Claire looked down.
Sophie’s tear-streaked face was pale.
“Aunt Brooke said I wasn’t supposed to tell.”
Every adult in the room turned toward her.
Brooke whispered, “Sophie.”
The child recoiled behind Claire.
Claire crouched. “You’re not in trouble.”
Sophie hesitated, then pointed toward the small backpack hanging on the back of her chair.
“She puts things in there sometimes.”
Brooke lunged forward.
Ethan blocked her.
Claire retrieved the backpack herself.
Inside were colored pencils, a library book, two granola-bar wrappers, and Sophie’s stuffed rabbit.
Then Claire found a black prepaid phone buried beneath a sweatshirt.
Brooke closed her eyes.
Ethan turned it on.
No passcode.
The message history contained no names, only numbers.
Claire read over his shoulder.
Did she sign yet?
Not yet.
Keep pressure on her.
What about Ethan?
He’ll believe the financial records.
Claire’s stomach tightened.
Ethan scrolled farther.
Another message appeared from four nights earlier.
Put the envelope in Sophie’s bag. Claire won’t search it.
Ethan looked at Brooke. “You used my daughter?”
“I never hurt her.”
“You hid a burner phone in a seven-year-old’s backpack!”
Evelyn suddenly moved toward the kitchen.
Claire noticed.
“Where are you going?”
“For water.”
“No.”
Evelyn stopped.
For the first time, fear crossed her face openly.
Ethan dialed the most frequently used number from the burner.
A phone began ringing somewhere in the dining room.
Everyone looked at Brooke.
Her purse remained silent.
So did Evelyn’s.
The ringing continued.
It was coming from the coat closet near the foyer.
Ethan walked toward it.
Inside, beneath several jackets, he found his late father’s old leather briefcase.
Evelyn whispered, “Don’t open that.”
Ethan looked at her.
His father had been dead for three years.
The briefcase was supposed to be locked in storage.
Inside were company ledgers, a second prepaid phone, several envelopes of cash, and a folder marked CLAIRE.
Claire’s hands began trembling.
Ethan opened it.
There were copies of her driver’s license, her signature, printed emails, and photographs of her entering banks and office buildings.
Someone had been documenting her movements for months.
Then Ethan found a notarized document.
A confession.
It stated that Claire alone had diverted company funds.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
Claire stared at it.
“I never signed that.”
Brooke began crying.
Ethan flipped to the final page.
The document was dated three days in the future.
Nobody moved.
It had already been prepared for Claire to confess to a crime she had not yet been formally accused of.
And clipped behind it was something even more disturbing.
A typed instruction sheet.
If Claire refuses, proceed with Plan B.
Ethan read the next line aloud.
“Use the custody evidence.”
Claire’s blood turned cold.
“What custody evidence?”
Brooke looked toward Evelyn.
Evelyn said nothing.
Then Sophie whispered from behind Claire, “Is that the video Grandma made me do?”
