He stepped closer and lowered his voice.
“The police chief is in my backyard eating barbecue.”
I said nothing.
“Every important person in this town knows my family.”
He nodded toward Lily.
“They also know she’s unstable.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“She isn’t unstable.”
“According to whom?”
Richard opened his arms.
“Everyone here saw her drinking and behaving strangely.”
I hadn’t seen a single glass near Lily.
But I understood what he was doing.
He was preparing the story before anyone could challenge it.
“My mother will confirm it,” he continued.
“The guests will confirm it.”
He leaned forward.
“And Mercer will make sure the police understand.”
Lily made a small sound behind me.
Richard glanced at her with open contempt.
“You should have stayed quiet.”
I turned toward my daughter.
She was watching him with terrified eyes.
Her fear wasn’t merely about the beating.
It was about what he might do after I left.
Then something beneath the couch caught my attention.
A faint blue light reflected against the polished floor.
I knelt and looked closer.
Lily’s phone lay partially hidden beneath the edge of the couch.
Its camera was facing the room.
A small red indicator glowed on the screen.
It was recording.
My heart began pounding for an entirely different reason.
I understood why Lily had risked placing it there.
She had known nobody would believe her without proof.
She had been forced to prepare evidence against the man who had promised to protect her.
Richard followed my gaze.
His expression changed instantly.
For the first time since I entered the house, he looked genuinely frightened.
“What’s that?”
I didn’t answer.
He stepped forward.
“Give me the phone.”
I picked it up carefully.
The recording was still running.
Richard reached toward me.
“That’s my property.”
I stood and placed myself between him and Lily again.
“It’s Lily’s phone.”
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“I understand perfectly.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You think some stupid recording changes anything?”
He pointed toward the window.
“Those people will believe whatever I tell them.”
Then he leaned closer.
“I can make one phone call and have you arrested before you reach the gate.”
I looked at my injured daughter.
She was trying to push herself upright.
I knelt beside her again.
“Sweetheart, I’m going to get you out of here.”
She grabbed my sleeve.
“He said nobody would help me.”
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
“He was wrong.”
I slipped her phone into my jacket pocket, keeping the recording running.
Then I helped her sit up.
She cried out softly.
“I’m sorry, Dad.”
Those words nearly brought me to my knees.
“You have nothing to apologize for.”
Richard watched from the bar.
“You’re making a serious mistake.”
I lifted Lily carefully into my arms.
She wrapped one trembling arm around my neck.
Her weight reminded me of the little girl I used to carry upstairs after she fell asleep watching movies.
But now she was a grown woman with bruises on her throat.
And the man who had hurt her was watching us leave without the slightest sign of remorse.
Evelyn stood near the front door when I approached.
She took one look at Lily and turned pale.
Then her expression hardened.
“Esto es un drama innecesario.”
No me detuve.
“No me voy a ir a ninguna parte.”
