Helen deserved a peaceful Mother’s Day, even if it meant pretending the evening had gone better than it had.

But Lauren wasn’t finished.

When Daniel returned with the check, he placed the leather folder beside Michael.

Michael reached toward it.

Lauren moved faster.

“I’ll look at that.”

She opened the folder and examined the total.

Her eyebrows rose.

“Seriously?”

Michael leaned toward her.

She tilted the folder so only he could see.

They exchanged a look.

It wasn’t the surprised expression of two people discovering an unexpectedly expensive bill.

It was the look of two people silently confirming something they had already discussed.

I felt the first cold knot form in my stomach.

Lauren closed the folder.

“That doesn’t mean we have to pay for everyone.”

Nobody answered.

Helen glanced at me, confused.

Michael whispered something to his wife.

She shook her head.

“No, Michael, I’m not doing that.”

Daniel stood beside the table, visibly uncomfortable.

I expected my son to apologize to him and settle the matter privately.

Instead, Michael lowered his eyes.

Lauren turned toward the waiter.

“We’re not paying for her.”

She pointed directly at Helen.

“Put her meal on a separate check.”

For a moment, I genuinely wondered whether I had misunderstood.

I looked from Lauren to my son.

He shifted in his chair.

“Lauren,” he murmured.

She ignored him.

“The chicken and whatever else she had should be separate.”

Daniel looked uncertain.

“Certainly, ma’am, if that’s how you’d like the checks arranged.”

Helen blinked.

“You mean mine?”

Lauren met her eyes.

“Yes.”

My wife’s face drained of color.

She looked toward Michael, waiting for him to explain.

He gave a small, helpless shrug.

“Mom, please, it’s just the bill.”

I felt something inside my chest tighten.

His mother had dressed carefully for this dinner.

She had brought a gift for the woman now humiliating her.

She had spent three days looking forward to an evening she believed was meant to honor her.

And my son had reduced all of it to a disagreement over the price of roasted chicken.

Helen swallowed.

“I thought you invited us.”

Michael rubbed his forehead.

“Can we not make this a big thing?”

Lauren gave a short laugh.

“Exactly, because there’s no reason to make a scene.”

I looked at her in disbelief.

She had just pointed at my wife as though Helen were an unwanted stranger who had wandered into their celebration.

And now she was accusing Helen of making a scene.

My wife reached slowly for her handbag.

“It’s all right,” she whispered.

She opened the clasp.

“I can pay for my dinner.”

Her fingers trembled slightly as she searched for her wallet.

I knew those hands.

They had held our son through fevers and nightmares.

They had worked long hours when money was tight.
